Well, the actual end goal is to teach English to deaf and hearing impaired kids. because I find the educational system to be woefully lacking and doing a disservice to the people it's suppose to be benefiting.
I would like to become an interpreter because I go to sci-fi and fantasy...
My HOH mom has been married five times to hearing guys so in her case it was all bad relationships. Though to be fair, their failure had more to do with my mom being a complete psycho rather than it having anything to do with her hearing.
Writing and speaking English are two separate things. As is writing and ASL. Could it be, just a thought, that it's more about a failing education system that perpetuates the stereotype that deaf = lower intelligence. That deaf and HOH kids aren't challenged academically as they should be?
When I was a teenager my first job was at a Burger King around the corner from the city's deaf school. A close family friend had a deaf brother who would bring really really hot friends with him to parties.
It became frustrating not to be able to communicate with these variety of people around...
I'm hearing and one thing that I have (and I feel I shouldn't) is strong (bordering on militant) opinions that I'm really reluctant to share with anyone from the Deaf community because what if they are actually ignorant and wrong. Making me a bigoted horrible person.
My name is Lynn and I recently moved from Minnesota to Florida. Looking to connect with the Deaf community in this area. I'm a college student looking to become an English teacher as well as becoming an interpreter.
