    How many signing languages?

Right. No "language" here. There is a difference in the italian definitions, too - LIS is "Lingua dei segni italiana" = "italian sign language" while they're trying to put it under the definition of "linguaggio" which barely means "form of communication"... Not a real language at all. :roll...

Spanking kids can cause long-term harm: Canada study

Yes, my husband is one of them. Yet I'm glad I wasn't in his place :hmm:

Spanking kids can cause long-term harm: Canada study

For what it can mean, I've never been spanked or grounded or anything. And I'm not a serial killer... The trick was, my dad was so adorable I couldn't ever do anything to displease him. He was always there, understanding, proud of me, ready to help me and listen to me. Even today, if I do...

1,5-year old wearing HAs going to CI

Yesterday, I was able to wake up my son in the afternoon by calling his name, at a normal/low volume, close to his HA (well, actually he opened his eyes only when I told him "pizza is ready" but that may be a coincidence). Yet, he often doesn't react to louder sounds. He has a filter for...

    Technology for Deaf children

Wow! the heart shaped one is so cute! Ok, now I know where to find stuff. Guess I'll need to make a few changes in the house while he grows up, too. At the moment, we have no skype nor flashing bell at the door. No wonder he's taken the habit of ignoring everything that goes on around him...

    Technology for Deaf children

I've already found some info around the forum, but I was wondering if there are products of everyday use designed for Deaf children. I'm thinking about an alarm to get my kids up in the morning for example... Something not too "violent" and possibly cute and coloured. Ringing alarms...

Cooperation with my 18-month old deaf boy

You know, it's not easy for hearing parents to find a way to mix sign and words in everyday life, especially when you still have no feedback from the child! I guess when he'll grow up and be able to use sign in a conversation, it'll come more natural for us to use them, too. Me and my...

Cooperation with my 18-month old deaf boy

This is something interesting, too. We hearing parents tend to sign AND speak at the same time, and we often are told to do so by therapists, too. But I'm understanding this may be bad and lead to confusion. I'm not proficient enough to just sign all the time. What would be the best approach...

    Otologics carina implant, anyone?

I think the fact they're not used for pediatric purpose may have something to do with it. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cooperation with my 18-month old deaf boy

Well, it's not a language. Just some simple signs to help little (hearing) babies to communicate before they're able to speak. Babies seem to pick up these signs very quickly (which shows how much visual communication is natural for ANY human being, not only deaf), and it seems to help with...

Cooperation with my 18-month old deaf boy

What an interesting question! I'll wait for reply, too! :hmm: As for me, I know I woukld start with signing from day #1. That's my biggest regret, truly, since now it seems sooo hard for him to learn that, too. And I tought of doing baby sign from the start, too... before knowing he was deaf...

    Hearing people's view of CI

Being parents means to take risks... Only our children will be able to judge what we've done for them, and make us notice all of our (unavoidable) mistakes. I'm conscious that my child may question why I didn't get him CI... And if I get one for him, he may ask why I didn't accept him like he...

    Hearing people's view of CI

One parent of CI kid I met, when I asked if they were doing SL, told me "No, he doesn't need it since now he's like any other hearing child" So, Grandel, yes, there are also parents who go through the CI route and still has no clue.
