    frequency compression/transposition/etc.

I have a question about the different aids that use frequency transposition or compression or whatever. My son (age 6) has been wearing Phonak Naidas for 4 years now, and he's due for a new pair. I figured we'd just get the newest Naidas and be fine, but then I read this article: Hearing Aid...

anyone here from Winnipeg? audist radio item

I heard a story on the radio this afternoon which made me pretty angry. Ok, really angry. It was about a woman who lost her hearing due to her work as a military pilot (noise damage, surprise). She was sent home hard of hearing, retrained to work in a daycare, and then lost her hearing. So, in...

    success/failure stats?

As it turns out, he's not elgible at the moment (found out yesterday afternoon). But thank you for that link to the hybrid - that is amazing! I met with Harry's SLP yesterday to ask her thoughts (before we found out he isn't eligible) and she was musing "it would be great if he could get a...

    success/failure stats?

I'm looking for: data/stats on medical success rates (implant surgery, revision surgery) post-CI audiograms showing access to speech sounds He is already a great reader, so I'm not concerned about literacy. And I feel overwhelmed by anecdotes! Just want facts at this point. He's doing...

    success/failure stats?

Can someone point me to a reliable source of unbiased information on the success/failure rates of CI? I've seen all the miracle success stories, and the implant failure stories. But are there any straight-up stats available on success/failure rates? What frequencies do CIs cover? Do they go...

    Using Naughty Language

I have found it's a regional thing or maybe a personal thing - I had a Deaf ASL teacher who grew up in Israel and lived in Montreal, she was shy about telling us a naughty sign - wouldn't even tell us what it meant, just "never do this!" But most of the people in my office have no fear of using...

    What's a difference between deaf and hard-of-hearing?

Well, I asked my son about this on the weekend (he's 5 3/4) because previously he had self-identified as "deaf" but I just got a book called "The Parenting Journey: Raising Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children" and he saw if and said "you should read that, because I'm hard of hearing." So I asked...

    Petition: Stop killing Deaf dogs

Well, I heard back from the University where the Dalmatian Club person works, and they are not happy about her using their resources for this. So at least the websites might get taken down. Dogo Argentinos also tend to be deaf, but I haven't heard of them being killed for it... wonder what the...

    Petition: Stop killing Deaf dogs

I find this just so very upsetting. I sent an email to the Dalmatian Club's contact person two days ago (and cc'd the New York Times for the heck of it) but haven't heard a word back. When I was posting here this morning it occurred to me - her contact info is a .edu address, which usually means...

    Petition: Stop killing Deaf dogs

The Dalmatian Club of America (which is endorsed by the American Kennel Club) advocates killing any dalmatian found to be deaf. Here's their position on the issue: Edited for brevity, read the whole thing here: Dalmatian Club of America Position on Dalmatian Deafness I find this so horrifying I...

Born with severe to profound hearing loss; hearing aids only

BecLak, thank you for sharing your story. I am so glad that you have reached a point in your life where you are comfortable and confident being yourself. And, what a jerk!! Grr. I can't stand people like that. We've always tried to treat Harry's hearing as part of who he is, nothing more...

Born with severe to profound hearing loss; hearing aids only

I am wondering, if you're willing to talk about it... what was the "wake-up call" that made you see everything so differently? I know that it some ways it is harder for oral deaf and hard of hearing people, because (as you say) hearing people don't believe that they're really not hearing...

to those BORN with severe-profound hearing loss

I don't know what it's like where you are, but here the school board employs an educational audiologist who should take care of this stuff. Get in touch with them and get it fixed! "In theory" they should hear both. But at my son's school, the mic doesn't get passed around to the students...

to those BORN with severe-profound hearing loss

Yup. I've heard stories. I've actually heard that the rules about whether you can get gov't assistance to purchase an FM system for adults have changed due to some of the less ethical dispenser audis pushing them on people, not offering any support or instruction, and so the user would just...

    Deaf Child street signs

I thought the idea was to let people know that they couldn't rely on leaning on the horn to tell a kid in the road to get out of the way. They don't have them in our city anymore, but I have seen them in other towns on occasions.
