Don't you hate it when hearing people being ignorant about deaf customers?

I rather to fly than road trips. Flying save a lot of times and able to take care of business faster than road trips. I only enjoy road trips if it don't last more than six hours.

I agree and I only have drive my car only at lest 4 hours but have not done a long driving trip than 4 hours, I only have been driving for 5 years. but Flying is the other solution to take care of long trips! ;)

Nice. :) Yeah... Flying is better than driving anyway! :)

True, who knows? We won't be alive by then if it happens in the year 2200! Beforehand, prehaps.

I doubt it. I heard skycars (flying cars) will be released at around year 2020. Skyscrapers are getting taller and taller lately... That will be most likely to have Stars Wars style world at around year 2030 or so.

Yeah, I have noticed that a lot lately, it has effected in my hometown of Canberra, Australia - They have broken the building Code and they are starting to build taller buildings, but Sydney is already getting some, we don't! And we like to remain like the building code stated... gee, what is wrong with the government, are they letting them, get taller and taller? What about the air pressure?

Haha! Skyscrapers are solution to handle world population exploding and help save the environment. Here in Seattle... We have over 60 skyscrapers under construction right now.

Let's get back to the topic.

Yeah, once again.. sorry about the off topic conversation.. I will make another thread about the skyscraper issues.

What is the real thing between deaf customers and other hearing customers at some stores? (Just a make up question ;))

Amen! It occured to these people, they might think deaf people can not do presentations, but deaf people can prove it, deaf people can talk, but they can use sign language at the same time and interpreter is present to relay the presentation smoothly and that is definitely no problem. Once last year, I was doing some multimedia course, and I was asked to make a genre presentation and I chosen 'Drama' genre and the research was hard but I ended up presentating the audience with excellent power points and comments from myself, expressed the interest and I was so confident and they were impressed that a dead person could do the multimedia as even that I am deaf. ANYTHING can do to the deaf people, EXCEPT that they can not hear... remember, deaf people have eyes to be alert with communication and other things they occur to do!

Excatly! Only thing is they can not hear. But that is not a problem.

Sorry to butt in on your conversation guys but I read whats been bolded and I got quite a giggle from the typo.

Carry on mates, this is an interesting conversation....

There was a spelling error

Thanks Dixie for pointing me that out, my bad!

Yes, I am serious, Josh ( if it is your name actually)... BUT we are actually ahead of you, becuase we have 3G techonologies for the phone networks for the video calling cellphones and I believe that america doesn't have the 3G networks yet and these high tech video calling cellphones yet too.. and you know America has 28 million deaf people but in australia we only have 6 million. America can eventually take over the whole australia contient!

Hey, do you know that we now have internet relay? I had a go with it with their trials and I believe that it's being formally launched today in Canberra. Here is the link in case you didn't know about it already:
http://www.iprelay.com.au/call/index.aspx
You will need Java to run it though - but if you don't have it, you'll get a pop up to help you download it.

By the way I have one of the 3G mobile phones too. The video call option is great although I hardly use it and the sound quality for making voice calls is excellent too, much better than the GSM network.

6 million out of 20 million Australians are deaf?? Where are they all?

Yes, I am aware of it, but I don't like the IP relay on the MSN - becuase the relay cut me off when I was in the middle of the conversation! :eek3: But I have not tried online one yet as I am not allowed to use JAVA on my work computer, unless it would possible work on my SK3....but I will check it out later.

Yeah, video calls are rarely used due to expensive costs, but it should be Free if other deaf person is with the other! I am with 3 and it is not free only voice calls are! >_<

I wonder where they are, maybe someone should organise the conferenence to get every single person in the population to meet up similar to Deaf way II  ;)

TTY brings back memories

25 Years ago, (In the good old days?) my first ASL instructor taught
us about the TTY. A very large box with a cradel for the telephone
handset and a printed readout that scrolled across the screen in
green lighted letters one line at a time. He said they were too
expensive to buy costing a couple of thousand dollars but if we
could find old teletype machines that the military used to use
we could get those and communicate with our Deaf friends.

We've come along way baby!

These techolgies still exists...

yup in places where broadband cable connections are too costly to set up so people still rely on TTY to communicate especially in smaller mostly rural countries.

But for the hugley popularity, costs cheaper, no?

I had an interesting experience once at my job.

I am hearing and at the time I worked in the gift shop of the local zoo. We had a group of deaf adults come to the zoo. A lot of times groups plan ahead so we know what to expect but not always. This group did not plan ahead with us, which isn't a problem although I felt REALLY stupid when I kept trying to ask a gentleman over and over if he needed help when he wasn't looking at me (I did finally realize he was deaf).

I felt bad though because I could not talk with this group. Most of the group wouldn't even make eye contact with me and just waited until the price showed up on the screen and handed me money. The only thing I knew how to sign, since I hadn't had any ASL classes yet, was "thank you" so I could at least sign that to them. I really felt bad because it seemed like this group, because of their response of not looking at me, had been treated badly or just mostly ignored in other places.

Do most people, in a customer service environment, ignore deaf customers? I hope not! Even though I was very ignorant in the above situation I still wanted to make an attempt to be polite and friendly. ::shrugs:: I still feel bad about it!
