Osprey Media. - The Sudbury Star - Ontario, CA

The province is failing in its role in ensuring all citizens are treated equally by dismantling American Sign Language programs and support services for deaf and hard of hearing children. The erosion of these services - in favour of oral or auditory-verbal programs - flies in the face of a court decision in 1989 that extended the right to the deaf to have ASL taught in classrooms.

Some deaf students walked out of class at deaf schools across Ontario last week to press for their rights and to raise awareness of the issue. Advocacy groups sought audiences with Ontario and Ottawa by holding rallies at Queen's Park and on Parliament Hill.

Why is the province so adamant about making sign language disappear, as it has been accused by critics? Apparently, advancements in technology are a factor in the government's thinking, but the advocacy groups for the deaf suggest that thinking is short-sighted.

And it doesn't explain the government's ongoing delays in implementing the the education rights the deaf have won.

The new technology involves cochlear implants, small complex electronic devices that do not restore normal hearing but can give a deaf person sounds that can lead to understanding speech.

The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto does more cochlear implants than any other hospital in North America. But the hospital clearly states on its website that the implants do not hold any guarantees for the deaf.

According to the Ontario Association for the Deaf, children enrolled in oral programs have a dropout rate of 62 per cent by the time they reach high school.

Only 1.7 per cent of the deaf earn a university degree and the number of deaf students enrolled in post-secondary institutions has fallen by 50 per cent in just two years.

Clearly, sign language is the choice for the deaf, and oral programs and cochlear implants can help, but they don't fully meet their needs.

Ontario Education Minister Kathleen Wynne says the government has been consulting with the deaf and is working to implement some standards and regulations for schools.

When confronted by the protesting deaf students last week, Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Ernie Parsons acknowledged the services should have been implemented years ago.

Further, he said he has introduced a private member's bill to have sign language recognized as an official language.

But if the province is about to reveal new standards and finally fulfil its obligations to the deaf, what is the point of the bill? Especially in light of Parsons' acknowledgement that the bill stands no chance of being passed before the election Oct. 10.

With a school for the deaf located in his riding, Parsons and his government should have been working to right this wrong long ago rather than patronizing the deaf with meaningless gestures.

In reality, when it comes to the deaf, it is the province that needs educating.

Well, that's because deaf support and services are poor in Canada. It's not surprising.

No offense to Canadians.

I glad I didn't live in Canada. I born and raised in U.S.A has well education
program in my own area-- Minnesota. I would say, "Canada sucks.
U.S.A is the best country in the world!"

Geez..so many people look down on deaf people and sign language and they say they know what's best for us?? Big joke!

i agree with you on that, shel.. sigh.. they think we are dumber but they are wrong! we can do ANYTHING except HEAR! sheesh! sigh! they r idiots.. sadly....

This is not quite true. A new leader (Canadian President) is "Republican" that copied the idea of USA's Republican laws. This is how the government is not helping Canada for many things. He allowed the health insurance companies to copy the America's health system which is a horrible idea. In fact, Canadian people made a terrible mistake that voted for the Republican leader. It has nothing to do with the Liberals. We will hear more bad news from Canada in a couple of months. It used to be free health insurance.

Europe has the best free health insurance in the world. Perhaps in France.

Do they have many good doctors? Canada has free health but have too many bad doctors.

I am not surprised to hear that.

Many deaf people are not aware of liberals/democrats. They takes advantage of deaf people by telling them that they provides the supports for them which only gave them very tiny such as SSI, some deaf services, and videophones. It is same thing for republicans/conversatives... They are also taking advantage of deaf people... Both parties are doing that just to collect the votes from deaf people.

I support some of liberal ideas and conversative ideas... I consider myself as moderate independant.

One more thing...

If you deaf people want to get some respect from hearing people... You deaf people have to work on your apperances seriously... I noticed that made huge difference... For example, few years ago, I only wore blue jean with baggy t-shirt with baggy jacket. It was for my own comfortable level... No one pay me respects but only deaf people because they just accept each other for who they are... I decided to change the way I dress... I bought clothes from ExpressMen, GAP, Banana Republic, D&G, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Nordstroms and Macys... I got alot of respects from hearing people. Also some of you deaf people need to stop saying "DEAF POWER!" that turned so many hearing people off. Try to be level with hearing people just get them to respect you deaf people. Also work hard to prove them wrong and prove yourself that you can do it! It is alot of work but worth it.

I agreed with you. It works that way.

By the way, I love to buy at Banana Republic store. I haven't gone to the other stores yet. Actually, I am not crazy to buy high fancy clothes. I prefer nice and proper clothes. That would make sense.

I am aware that fancy clothes with good quality won't last so you shouldn't spend a lot of money on fancy clothes.

I am not surprised at all... i have friends who got married to american deaf guys and live in America.. they told me about the barriers in Canada..... I feel sorry for deafies from there.... It is high time that barriers breaks down...

Who said anyone have to wear fancy clothes for daily? Just improve their apperence by dress up nicely (doesn't have to be expensive, just nice). It is my decision if I want to spend on expensive clothes... I only spend it for my school since we are required to dress up professional since we are in job training. After graduation, I will be expected to dress up professionally for my job for sure.

Gee. It's ok for you to buy expensive clothes. I bought expensive clothes in the past, and some turned fade or some fluffy-balls. I did not ask you to make a decision. What are you thinking? Maybe, you might want to wear a zerba suit for a job interview. Hee Hee. Of course, I'm kidding! :giggle:

Problem is many deaf people are struggling to support themselves and their families and cant afford nice clothes. It is expensive to raise a family these days. I used to shop at those stores but since having kids, I cant afford it anymore. When I have spending money for myself, I would go to the cheaper clothes stores to get more for my money instead of $100 on one outfit.

I would love to have a shopping spree at those stores like old times but other bills or kids" needs come first.

Hahaha! Depends on what clothes you buy... :)

That is completely different story when family comes along. Hearing people are like that too.

Many deaf people without childen are often making excuses that they can't afford it... Actually they can afford if they stop spending alot of money on alochol, smokes, drugs, weeds, pornography, dvds, and anything that is not very important for the general but only more important to themselves. If they're really have budget tight... Some of my friends who are like that can find really nice clothes from Goodwill or Value Village. One time I saw one of my friends wore really nice suit... I asked him where did he got that... He said from Value Village. I was impressed and he got it for 5 bucks for that clothes that worth 300 dollars!!!! I decided to check it out there to see if he is telling the truth and I can find so many almost new clothes for really cheap as under 20 bucks! So no excuse for many people who say "I can't afford it" but they really can afford it if they stop spending on ridiculous junks. :)

I completely agree with you! Yes, we do buy some clothes from thrift stores if we want to. We find some deals on things from thrift stores sometimes. Most of the time we buy things/apperals new, depending what it is.

There is no such thing a free healthcare. People pay for it--just via the gov't. The problem is, any time you have government making economic things equal, it's usually a LOW equal.

That is sad about the deaf failing due to oralism but I doupt it's just restricted to Cananda.

I lead a vegan and drug free lifestyle. I've never bought porno in my life and I don't even own a TV never mind a DVD. I'm not poor. You get quite generous benifit money for being deafblind actually but it goes on my furry family members, organic food, and tecnology etc... I save money on clothes as they are not important to me. I know what you are saying about wanting respect from hearies and all that but you can't expect everyone to shop at expensive places because people have differant priorites.

Plus if someone is only interested in those wearing posh clothes I am not interested in getting their respect.
