Miller decide to move to Indiana. My opinion, it could be more attractive compare to SD. Check his last 3 blogs.

Our Signing Town

What everyone think?

That's too cool! Following in the footsteps of Martha's Vineyard? I was reading not long ago, about other cultures where all members sign and speak, and no difference is made between deaf and hearing members, The most interesting was a village in Bali, and another in Mexico.

Yeah, isn't that cool? If you want to read about them, I'll give you the title of the book I was reading. I was actually doing research for an anthropology paper.

That's cooL! I would like to know :D

I wonder what's happened to the money that were invested and donated to the mission and purpose of the Town of Laurent.

The title of the book is "Sociolinguistics in Deaf Communities" Volume 2. Edited by Ceil Lucas, published by Gallaudet U. Press, 1996. If your local library doesn't have it, ask them to borrow it from a university library for you. Most public libraries can go online and have books shipped from anywhee in their state.

It's an interesting concept. I'd love to visit such a town. If it were close enough to friends and family here in Michigan, I might even consider moving to such a town.

He's right about Indiana School for the Deaf according to my brother, who had wanted to intern there next fall (but instead will be doing that at Michigan School for the Deaf, where he's been a sub teacher for years).

Yeah, I've often wished that Martha's Vineyard was still in existence. And since reading about the community in Bali I would love to go there.

im sadden that they're moving to indiana.. i just wish they keep south dakota.. its a beautiful state with odd lands, yet fun ATVing too as well.. good attractions too.

i'm sad because its close to where i live and had a dream to visit that town one day.

I am completely against this idea. I personally know Miller and discussed it with him few years ago. He is doing this just for profit and will leave that new town for signers with millions of dollars. He plans to take advantage of deaf people including you guys. Miller already doing brainwash many deaf people to live in his community, will continue doing it to get more deaf people to move to his community, and will hurt them at the end. Do not trust him.

Different point... Would you want to live in a community that you would isolute yourself from the reality just get away from hearing people? I don't like it at all. I rather to live in real world. Also I consider that community is another generation of separetion between deaf people and hearing people. I am against any types of separetions. Also it is illegal to discriminate anyone in that community.

First I have to say, Miller did not discriminate against anyone, but he says that anyone are welcome to move to that town, but the business, schools, etc. will require to do the ASL.

Other things, I am halfing agree with you, it could islotating deaf people from the world. You are not the only one who are against this, there's lot of people are against this too.

Allright I will take a look at it! ;) Thanks btw :D

Once you get knows him better, you will see why.

As the city grows, newcomers will not give a damn about ASL only if they have something to related to deaf community (e.i. friends, relatives, and co-workers).

Then those people who don't give a damn about ASL can't have any job there. They only can live there, but can't work because no ASL. That is what Miller mean..

They can't do that. That is illegal to discriminate workers because they don't know ASL. What's if that town attracts corporations such as Google or Boeing or Verizon that are known as "hearing" companies decide to relocate there and they will ignore the policy by hiring workers that don't know ASL? They will sue Miller or city for discimination for sure.

Then why is there a Chinatown? Signing Town is just like that.

I don't want to argue, ya know. Even I am not really supporting this town neither, but I just want to give out the news to the deafies.

I have no idea how Miller recieved the permit for a town that specific for signing language too..

Haha I am not arguing with you or anyone else here. I just telling you the laws. :)

Speaking of Chinatown... Sure many people there speaks their own languages but they're required to learn to speak/write English if they're in USA.

Only thing I would support it... If they decided to build a deaf neighborhood in exisiting US cities just like Chinatown, African American, GLBT neighborhoods. It will add great diversity in existing US cities and still around hearing people in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Maybe we should offer Miller to do that? Instead of having a overwhelming hard working for a big town just for small community deaf?

You are bringing up good idea here :D I like your idea :)

I believe I saw one comment in one of his last blogs was suggesting to build a condos for deafies and signers.
