I have a family who are Jehovah's Witnesses and I'am hard of hearing, I was raised around Jehovah's Witnesses all my entires life and plus I was raised right and I have a very warm-loving family....You mentioned how you heard from anyone saying that the end is coming in 1975, they misunderstand and thought it's gonna end right then in 1975, people on earth do not know when it's gonna happen, Onlys God Jehovah will do this, he will not tells anyone on the earth when it's gonna end, but it's gonna be a pretty big surprise when his judgment day come....I can prove this to anyone that Jehovah's Witnesses are not a Cult, because I was raised in a very good home with lots of love and (if my family did not know about Jehovah's Witnesses or if they didn't accept it, I would probably be in a very bad situation, that I may not live today,) I thanks Jehovah for saving my life, if it weren't for Jehovah, I would probably ended up killing someone or stealing, maybe do drugs, or hooking on the street, I'm glad this didn't happen to me, because I learns alots about the Bible and I have a Bible Study, it's excellent....Jehovah's Witnesses are not preying, how could you says such a terrible things about Jehovah's Witnesses who are good to you and try to help you to know God Jehovah's law to do what's right, not wrong, baptized as Jehovah's Witnesses stands for Jesus as a Christian, they follow Jesus's way preaching door to door, Jesus did go to door to door to preach people about Jehovah's Kingdom will come, that's what Jehovah's Witnesses are doing and they wants to helps and save people's life, but it's Jehovah who want you to know him and his law, not people on the earth, Jehovah's Witnesses do not use their own word, they obeyed God's law in the Bible, they tell you what the Bible says and also Many false religions will be responsible for the death of many people, because they do not teach people the truth about Jehovah God...Here's an Example a friend I used to be around not a Jehovah's Witnesses, he smokes weeds, stealing and go to Church, did the Bible says it's okay to smoke weeds and it's okay to steals ? I noticed that a friend's religion is not teaching the truth, because he was smoking weeds and also stealing tires, etcs....Now I see many false religion are not interesting to teach people the truth, because they wanted money is all they care, false religion allows people to do what they wanted to do and that how they get paid for also You are helping the false religion richer and the poorer you are, they are taking advantage of you and anyone....Jehovah's Witnesses do not do that, they do not ask for money, it's free...Amen!

I know.........Johos are fucking scary. And yet, they've been saying that the world is going to end for years and years and years now. Whatever happened to 1975?
I vote that this thread be deleted! Everyone knows that Johos actively prey (they call it "missionarying to" ) on dhh folks, b/c dhh folks very often don't feel like they fit in any where. I'm sorry, but Johos are a CULT. I would suggest this for any strange religion.

You Can Live Forever in Paradise

You Can Live Forever in Paradise

God's purpose to restore an earthly paradise will soon be realized

What a marvelous outlook for the future! What real purpose lives can now have when anchored to the solid hope that in God's new world all of today's problems will forever be things of the past! "The former things will not be called to mind, neither will they come up into the heart." (Isaiah 65:17) And how comforting to know that life then will be eternal: "[God] will actually swallow up death forever."—Isaiah 25:8.
Do you want to live forever in that Paradise new world now so near? 'What would I need to do to get God's favor at this world's end and live on into his new world?' you may ask. You need to do what Jesus indicated in a prayer to God: "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ."—John 17:3.
Therefore, obtain a Bible, and confirm what you have read in this brochure. Search out others who study and teach these Bible truths. Break free from hypocritical religions that teach and do things contrary to the Bible. Learn how you, along with millions of others who are already doing God's will, can share in God's purpose that humans live forever on a paradise earth. And take to heart what God's inspired Word declares about the near future: "The world is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever."—1 John 2:17.

Live Forever on a Paradise Earth

What will life be like when God removes wickedness and suffering from the earth and ushers in his new world under the loving control of his heavenly Kingdom? God promises to 'open his hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.'—Psalm 145:16.
What are your legitimate desires? Are they not for a happy life, worthwhile work, material abundance, beautiful surroundings, peace among all peoples, and freedom from injustice, sickness, suffering, and death? And what about a joyful spiritual outlook? All those things will be realized soon under the rulership of God's Kingdom. Note what Bible prophecies say of the wonderful blessings to come in that new world.

Mankind at Perfect Peace

"[God] is making wars to cease to the extremity of the earth. The bow he breaks apart and does cut the spear in pieces; the [war] wagons he burns in the fire."—Psalm 46:9.
"They will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore."—Isaiah 2:4.
"The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace."—Psalm 37:11.
"The whole earth has come to rest, has become free of disturbance. People have become cheerful with joyful cries."—Isaiah 14:7.

Man and Animals at Peace

"The wolf will actually reside for a while with the male lamb, and with the kid the leopard itself will lie down, and the calf and the maned young lion and the well-fed animal all together; and a mere little boy will be leader over them. And the cow and the bear themselves will feed; together their young ones will lie down. And even the lion will eat straw just like the bull. And the sucking child will certainly play upon the hole of the cobra; and upon the light aperture of a poisonous snake will a weaned child actually put his own hand. They will not do any harm or cause any ruin."—Isaiah 11:6-9.
"For them I shall certainly conclude a covenant in that day in connection with the wild beast of the field and with the flying creature of the heavens and the creeping thing of the ground . . . I will make them lie down in security."—Hosea 2:18.

Perfect Health, Everlasting Life

"At that time the eyes of the blind ones will be opened, and the very ears of the deaf ones will be unstopped. At that time the lame one will climb up just as a stag does, and the tongue of the speechless one will cry out in gladness."—Isaiah 35:5, 6.
"[God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore."—Revelation 21:4.
"No resident will say: 'I am sick.'"—Isaiah 33:24.
"Let his flesh become fresher than in youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor."—Job 33:25.
"The gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord."—Romans 6:23.
"Everyone exercising faith in him [will]. . . have everlasting life."—John 3:16.

The Dead Restored to Life

"There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."—Acts 24:15.
"The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs [God's memory] will hear his voice and come out."—John 5:28, 29.
"The sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Hades [the grave] gave up those dead in them."—Revelation 20:13.

Earth, a Paradise of Plenty

"Pouring rains of blessing there will prove to be. And the tree of the field must give its fruitage, and the land itself will give its yield, and they will actually prove to be on their soil in security."—Ezekiel 34:26, 27.
"The earth itself will certainly give its produce; God, our God, will bless us."—Psalm 67:6.
"The wilderness and the waterless region will exult, and the desert plain will be joyful and blossom as the saffron."—Isaiah 35:1.
"The mountains and the hills themselves will become cheerful before you with a joyful outcry, and the very trees of the field will all clap their hands. Instead of the thicket of thorns the juniper tree will come up. Instead of the stinging nettle the myrtle tree will come up."—Isaiah 55:12, 13.
"You will be with me in Paradise."—Luke 23:43.

Good Housing for All

"They will certainly build houses and have occupancy . They will not build and someone else have occupancy; they will not plant and someone else do the eating. . . . The work of their own hands my chosen ones will use to the full. They will not toil for nothing, nor will they bring to birth for disturbance."—Isaiah 65:21-23.
"They will actually sit, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, and there will be no one making them tremble."—Micah 4:4.

If You Could Live Forever
Would You Choose To ?

You really can live forever in Paradise on earth, as this brochure clearly shows. God's purpose for such conditions is certain to be fulfilled! But you have to choose to live forever.

That choice, Jesus Christ taught, must be based on accurate knowledge of God. This brochure was provided to help you gain that knowledge. Further help can be received from Jehovah's Witnesses. They would be pleased to visit you at a time and place convenient for you. And if you would like to have a free home Bible study, you may make this known by writing to Watchtower, 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, New York 11201, or an appropriate address.

What Greek text does your JW New Testament follow? Please answer this question.

What do you means the words Greek ?
In the meantime, We obeyed God's law in the Bible to do what's right, we worship only Jehovah God our father in heaven who made us wonderfully, he gave us many things we needs to provide ourselves, he gave us foods, water for all to drink so that we don't thirst to death, clothes to wears to cover ourselves and a place to live so we don't get cold or too hot or get snowed or rained on to keeps us dry, he made the earth beautiful, trees, flowers, many splendid things he puts on earth, he also made the sun so we can see the daylight and a moon at night to go to sleep, give us rain to keeps the earth from drying and many different beautiful seasons, also JW got baptized because they love Jehovah and Jehovah's son Jesus, JW become a baptized Christian to be Jesus followers to preach door to door about the Good News about the Kingdom, they encourage nicely....Any question, you don't make sense about the Greek ...They just obey God's law and follow Jesus to preach about the Good News ...doing what's right and to love what's good, not bad....Amen!

I don't believe in JW. It's a cult. A false doctrine.

I don't believes JW either. They rewritten in bible book. They don't celebrate any holidays and that is really suck. No fun for JW!

Johovah's Witnesses are not a cult. What I see here is a lot of people who have very little knowledge of the bible.

Being raise a Baptist the best knowlwdge and understanding was when I began to study with Jehovah's Witnesses. Do I regret openning the door for them NO. Wish I had done it sooner

I am amazed at how you people claim to love the Christ but fail to show his loving kindness. If you suppose that celebration of his birthday makes you a beliver you are wrong. Jehovah's Witnesses are not the only ones who know that most of these holidays are wrong.

Even the world a large knows that religion has played a big part in the wars we are fighting, example Iraq. Watch Public Televison you learn that or even Oprah. That was her topic today.

But no you won't do that its to much like right!!

True you are entiled to your belief, but don't blame Witnesses for your poor choices.

Maybe you should read the gospels of Jesus you might find out that he went door to door.

Jehovah's Witnesses are a peace loving people who work hard to live by the bible.

I don't believes JW either. They rewritten in bible book. They don't celebrate any holidays and that is really suck. No fun for JW!

Look at the bible you are reading it was rewritten also. If it was'nt
you wouldn't be able to read it. It was written in Hebrew & Greek.

No, that is not what I talk about. What I talk about is that JW New Testment translated from Greek text. What Greek text was the JW New Testament translation derived from?

Askjo see what Jsann138 just said

Jsann138 just explain already about the Bible is written in Hebrew and Greek, it came that way years years ago ....

This is a good points for saying you don't believe in JW, You don't believe in JW, you have to believe in God's words, not JW ....but if you believe in God and Jesus, Why not say I don't believe in God and Jesus ? Jehovah's Witnesses are God's people, they worship the true God name Jehovah, Jehovah name printed 17,000 time in the Bible....Jehovah's Witnesses follows God's law to do what's right, they have a clean morals standard for themselves also they become baptized to be a Christian as Christ followers, They preach the good news about the Kingdom and that what Jesus did years ago....Jehovah had 40 apostle to write the Bible for him, God tells them to write his law in the Bible, Jehovah's Witnesses do not change the Bible, it stayed the same as what was told long time ago, but in False Religion they took Jehovah's name out and that's wrong, it's wrong to change the Bible and to take everythin'g out of the Bible is a no no not supposed to do that, God will judge those who took his name out and many out of his Bible, his true law....

There's no holidays mentioned in the Bible to celebrate, when Jesus was born he did not have a birthday, the reason why we do not celebrate birthday because Jesus don't celebrate birthday, we celebrate Jesus memorial day, he has to save us from death and he had to die for us, and all other holidays are a pagan, ideas made up by false religion people, Jehovah said we are not to carve or worship an idols except him, we are to worship him in heaven, he is our father who wonderfully created us human to live on earth....Another reason why we do not take parts in Birthday celebration is because Herod gave the girl an oath, that he promised her he'll give her anything she wanted for his birthday, so the girl went home asked her mother (her mother) what she should get for Herod's birthday, and the mother said the beheaded of John the Baptized, Jesus baptized John, John was a good man, he did no crime nothing and the girl came back told Herod I want the beheaded of John the Baptized and Herod was stunned and didn't know what to do, he gave that little girl an oath, so he ordered to have John's head cut off and they all celebrate it, it's disgusting, gross immorality wrong, that's why we don't follow anyone who invented holiday and Jesus was not born on Dec 25, it never say that in the Bible, You needs to read your Bible and you'll know there's no holidays mentioned in the Bible....JW do have fun, we do wedding, bridal shower, pinic gathering, play game, entertainment, graduation party, retirement party, going away party, baby shower, much more also we give gifts anytime, not just one day but more than one day of all years, we do this for love at all time not just one day.

I don't believes JW either. They rewritten in bible book. They don't celebrate any holidays and that is really suck. No fun for JW!

I have a mother and an older sister who are baptized Jehovah's Witnesses also have relatives who are baptized Jehovah's Witnesses too, I was raised around the truth all my life ....Do you know what Cult means ? You don't say just don't believe in Jehovah's Witnesses, but it's God you do not believe, Have you read the Bible ? You don't know what Jehovah's Witnesses is about, But you probably heard through the rumors by apostate that tells lies about Jehovah's Witnesses knows the truth but is misleading everyone will be judge when God's judgment day come....How would you like it if someone spread around calling you a Cult, how would you feels ? You accused Jehovah's Witnesses saying they are a Cult, that's not nice....How can it be a false doctrine, you never try to have a Bible study to find out about God's law and followers of Jesus, how can it be false ? God's people love God, they are doing his will to do what's right and they preach door to door to tells the good news about the Kingdom just like what Jesus did, Jehovah's Witnesses love everyone no-matther what if their enemy don't love them back, but they will continues to be different and follows Jesus example to treat one another right not wrong and to love one another at all time, they like to help and encourage everyone about God's law...

You cannot judge anyone saying they're a cult, you are not a God, you don't know anything about Jehovah's Witnesses but rumors is all you know, to says untrue things about other people has a small mind.

Looks up in the informations ...Tell me exactly what Cult means to you ?

I don't believe in JW. It's a cult. A false doctrine.

Trickpony,
I am not blind . I can read. I don't need big blue BOLD print. Sorry still don't believes JW. They came to my house for years. So, still don't believes it. I heard the news in about 6 yrs ago. A JW woman kill herself because of that JW cult. Don't try to push me and preach me. I don't need it. I rather not to bother it. I respect your believes. I already read it. I don't like rewritten story. Its had to stop rewritten story.

Who Are They?

They are
interested in you

IT IS the desire of Jehovah's Witnesses that you become better acquainted with them. You may have met them as neighbors and fellow employees or in other daily affairs of life. You may have seen them on the street, offering their magazines to passersby. Or you may have spoken briefly with them at your door.

Actually, Jehovah's Witnesses are interested in you and your welfare. They want to be your friends and to tell you more about themselves, their beliefs, their organization, and how they feel about people and the world in which all of us live. To accomplish this, they have prepared this brochure for you.

In most ways Jehovah's Witnesses are like everyone else. They have normal problems—economic, physical, emotional. They make mistakes at times, for they are not perfect, inspired, or infallible. But they try to learn from their experiences and diligently study the Bible to make needed corrections. They have made a dedication to God to do his will, and they apply themselves to fulfill this dedication. In all their activities they seek guidance from God's Word and his holy spirit.

They are dedicated to
God to do his willIt is of vital importance to them that their beliefs be based on the Bible and not on mere human speculations or religious creeds. They feel as did the apostle Paul when he expressed himself under inspiration: "Let God be found true, though every man be found a liar." (Romans 3:4, New World Translation*) When it comes to teachings offered as Biblical truth, the Witnesses strongly endorse the course followed by the Beroeans when they heard the apostle Paul preach: "They received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so." (Acts 17:11) Jehovah's Witnesses believe that all religious teachings should be subjected to this test of agreement with the inspired Scriptures, whether the teaching is offered by them or by someone else. They invite you—urge you—to do this in your discussions with them.

They believe the
Bible is God's WordFrom this it is apparent that Jehovah's Witnesses believe in the Bible as the Word of God. They consider its 66 books to be inspired and historically accurate. What is commonly called the New Testament they refer to as the Christian Greek Scriptures, and the Old Testament they call the Hebrew Scriptures. They rely on both of these, the Greek and the Hebrew Scriptures, and take them literally except where the expressions or settings obviously indicate that they are figurative or symbolic. They understand that many of the prophecies of the Bible have been fulfilled, others are in the course of fulfillment, and still others await fulfillment.

THEIR NAME
Jehovah's Witnesses? Yes, that is the way they refer to themselves. It is a descriptive name, indicating that they bear witness concerning Jehovah, his Godship, and his purposes. "God," "Lord," and "Creator"—like "President," "King," and "General"—are titles and may be applied to several different personages. But "Jehovah" is a personal name and refers to the almighty God and Creator of the universe. This is shown at Psalm 83:18, according to the King James version of the Bible: "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth."

God's personal name in ancient Hebrew

The name Jehovah (or Yahweh, as the Roman Catholic Jerusalem Bible and some scholars prefer) appears almost 7,000 times in the original Hebrew Scriptures. Most Bibles do not show it as such but substitute "God" or "Lord" for it. However, even in these Bibles, a person can usually tell where the original Hebrew text uses Jehovah because in those places the substituted words are written in large and small capitals, thus: GOD, LORD. Several modern translations do use either the name Jehovah or the name Yahweh. Hence, the New World Translation reads at Isaiah 42:8, "I am Jehovah. That is my name."

The name as related to
a courtroom dramaThe Scriptural account that Jehovah's Witnesses draw on for their name is in the 43rd chapter of Isaiah. There the world scene is viewed as a courtroom drama: The gods of the nations are invited to bring forth their witnesses to prove their claimed cases of righteousness or to hear the witnesses for Jehovah's side and acknowledge the truth. Jehovah there declares to his people: "Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour."—Isaiah 43:10, 11, American Standard Version.

Jehovah God had witnesses on earth during the thousands of years before Jesus was born. After Hebrews chapter 11 lists some of those men of faith, Hebrews 12:1 says: "So, then, because we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also put off every weight and the sin that easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." Jesus said before Pontius Pilate: "For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth." He is called "the faithful and true witness." (John 18:37; Revelation 3:14) Jesus told his disciples: "You will receive power when the holy spirit arrives upon you, and you will be witnesses of me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the most distant part of the earth."—Acts 1:8.

Hence, some 6,000,000 persons today who are telling the good news of Jehovah's Kingdom by Christ Jesus in over 230 lands feel that they properly refer to themselves as Jehovah's Witnesses.

Jehovah's Witnesses-Who Are They ? What Do They Believe?

What Do They Believe?

EARTH . . . created by Jehovah . . . cared for by man . . . inhabited forever
JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES believe in Almighty God, Jehovah, Creator of the heavens and the earth. The very existence of the intricately designed wonders in the universe surrounding us reasonably argues that a supremely intelligent and powerful Creator produced it all. Just as the works of men and women reflect their qualities, so do those of Jehovah God. The Bible tells us that "his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world's creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made." Also, without voice or words, "the heavens are declaring the glory of God."—Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1-4.

People do not mold clay pots or make television sets and computers without a purpose. The earth and its creations of plant and animal life are far more marvelous. The structure of the human body with its trillions of cells is beyond our understanding—even the brain with which we think is incomprehensibly wonderful! If men have a purpose in bringing forth their comparatively insignificant inventions, surely Jehovah God had a purpose in his awesome creations! Proverbs 16:4 says that he does: "Everything Jehovah has made for his purpose."

Jehovah made the earth for a purpose, as he stated to the first human pair: "Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth . . . , have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth." (Genesis 1:28) Because they became disobedient, this couple failed to fill the earth with righteous families who would lovingly care for the earth and its plants and animals. But their failure does not make Jehovah's purpose fail. Thousands of years later, it was written: "God, the Former of the earth . . . , did not create it simply for nothing." He "formed it even to be inhabited." It is not to be destroyed, but "the earth endures for ever." (Isaiah 45:18; Ecclesiastes 1:4, The New English Bible) Jehovah's purpose for the earth will be realized: "My own counsel will stand, and everything that is my delight I shall do."—Isaiah 46:10.

Hence, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the earth will remain forever and that all people, living and dead, who will fit in with Jehovah's purpose for a beautified, inhabited earth may live on it forever. All mankind inherited imperfection from Adam and Eve and, hence, are sinners. (Romans 5:12) The Bible tells us: "The wages sin pays is death." "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all." "The soul that is sinning—it itself will die." (Romans 6:23; Ecclesiastes 9:5; Ezekiel 18:4, 20) Then how can they live again to share in the earthly blessings? Only through the ransom sacrifice of Christ Jesus, for he said: "I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life." "All those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out."—John 5:28, 29; 11:25; Matthew 20:28.

How will this come about? It is explained in "the good news of the kingdom," which Jesus started to proclaim while on earth. (Matthew 4:17-23) But today Jehovah's Witnesses are preaching the good news in a very special way.

Though Deaf and Blind

Though Deaf and Blind,

I Found Security

AS TOLD BY JANICE ADAMS
From birth, I was virtually deaf, yet I learned to manage in a hearing world. Then, while in college, I was shocked when I was told that I would become blind. My well-meaning college counselor gave me an article about living without sight and sound. Immediately, my eyes caught the phrase that those both deaf and blind are the loneliest people in the world. I burst into tears.

Help for Children With Learning Disabilities
I WAS born in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.A., on July 11, 1954, the only child of Dale and Phyllis Den Hartog. Little did my parents realize that both of them were carriers of a genetic condition known as Usher's syndrome, which is characterized by congenital deafness with progressive visual loss.

My parents did not at first suspect any problem with me. Perhaps this was because I had a little residual hearing of low frequencies and would sometimes respond to sounds. However, when I did not develop speech, they knew something was seriously wrong. The doctor finally diagnosed my deafness when I was about the age of three.

The news devastated my parents. Yet, they were determined that I receive the best possible education. I was put in an excellent preschool for the hard-of-hearing. But since I was nearly deaf, I failed miserably. My frustration was sometimes displayed by banging my head against the wall.

Sent Away to a Special School
My parents chose to enter me in the Central Institute for the Deaf (CID), in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite the great financial cost and the heartbreak of sending me away at the age of five, they figured that this was my best hope for a successful, happy life. My parents and I really could not communicate at that time.

I watched Mother pack my clothes in a trunk. The journey by car seemed endless. At CID, I remember seeing the other little girls with no mothers and thinking, 'Oh, I won't have to stay here because I have a mommy and a daddy.' When it came time for my parents to leave, they tried to explain that they would come back in a few months. I cried and cried and held onto them tightly, but the housemother pried me away so that they could leave.

I felt abandoned. Alone with the other girls on our first night at the school, I tried to comfort a crying girl by pretending to talk to her, although I couldn't actually speak at the time. The housemother scolded me and set up a divider between us so that we could not try to communicate. The wall remained there from then on. The isolation was crushing.

Gradually I figured out that all of us were there because we could not hear. Perhaps my parents loved me after all, but I reasoned that it was my fault that I had failed preschool. I was determined to succeed this time and one day return to my family.

The education at CID was excellent. Although we were not allowed to use sign language, we were given lots of individual instruction in lipreading and in speaking. All the subjects taught in regular schools were emphasized as well. While I believe that the oral-only approach, as it is called, does not work well for many deaf children, it worked for me, and I felt successful. With my hearing aids, I learned how to make sense out of the mouth movements and muffled sounds of others' speech. Most hearing people were starting to understand my improved, though imperfect, speech. My parents and the school were extremely satisfied with my success. Still, I longed to be back home.

Each summer vacation I would beg my parents to let me stay home and go to school in Iowa, but there were still no local programs. After I returned to school, Mother would send me a letter each day and include a stick of chewing gum. How I treasured that gum because of the love it represented! Rather than chew it, I would save each piece, and I especially cherished them when feeling depressed.

Home Again, but Problems Arise
Finally, when I was ten, my parents brought me home. I was so happy and felt so secure to be with my family! I enrolled in a local special school in Des Moines for children with hearing loss. Eventually I was mainstreamed into regular classes because I was a fairly good speech-reader and had developed intelligible speech. Yet, there were many challenges with my new situation.

In the dormitory at CID, I had felt accepted by my deaf peers. But now, when I had to interact with more than one person at a time, my speechreading skills could not keep up with the fast communication. So I would be left out. I wanted so badly to be accepted!

This led to my seeking the approval of teenage boys, which resulted in becoming involved in compromising situations. And I didn't know how to say no. When I was 14, I was raped; but I told no one. Although my parents were always concerned and loving, I felt isolated and lost.

With my hearing aids, I could enjoy music somewhat, but my choice of music was questionable. I listened to loud acid rock. I also became a regular marijuana user and withdrew more and more. I still feel deep regret when I look back on what I did during those turbulent years and on the pain it caused my family and me.

Efforts to Improve My Life
Throughout this period, I had a continuing thirst for learning and a desire to be creative. I read constantly, painted, sewed, and embroidered. I wanted more out of my life than what the future held for my friends who were only into drugs. So I registered in a regular college near home to pursue my interest in art. About this time I decided to learn sign language because I was frustrated at being left out socially.

Eventually I transferred to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York, to major in ceramic art. Although my eyesight was progressively getting worse—a fact that I somehow refused to recognize—I felt as though my life was heading in the right direction. But then my college counselor made me face reality by telling me that I would soon go blind.

The institution was ill prepared to handle my needs, and I had to leave. What would I do now? Although saddened by the prospect of soon becoming blind, I was determined to find a way to live independently and not end up as, in the words of the article the counselor gave me, 'one of the loneliest people in the world.' I returned home to Iowa to learn how to read Braille and how to use a cane for mobility.

Move to Washington, D.C.
Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the world's only liberal arts college for the deaf, had specialized services for deaf-blind students. I transferred there and graduated with honors in 1979. Once again, I felt good to be able to succeed academically.

Yet, I still felt socially isolated from my peers. Robbed by my visual loss, I had learned sign language just in time to start to feel as though I belonged to a group, the Deaf community. The sign language I use is the same as the one other deaf people use. However, because I must put my hands on theirs to understand them, some deaf people avoided me out of awkwardness. I began to wonder if I would ever be truly accepted by any group of people.

Search for True Religion
Religion had not provided me with comfort while I was growing up. And in college, even though I took a course in religion, I never received answers to my many questions. After graduating from college, I continued to look for answers. During this time I was unhappy with my relationships, so I began to pray to God for his guidance.

In 1981, I moved back to Gallaudet University to get my master's degree in rehabilitation counseling. I continued to pray for help to find the right church. Several people offered to take me to their churches, but for one reason or another, they did not follow through. Then I met Bill, who could hear normally and was also in graduate school. He discovered, quite by chance, that I shared his interest in the Bible, and he told me that he was learning all kinds of amazing things from Jehovah's Witnesses.

My first impression was that Jehovah's Witnesses were some Jewish cult, an opinion that I found to be common to many deaf people. Bill assured me that they were not, and he said that the best way to find out about them would be to attend one of their meetings. I really did not want to go, but I remembered my prayer. I reluctantly agreed, on the condition that we sit in the back row so that we could escape if they put any pressure on us.

I Felt Right at Home
I was very nervous as we drove to the meeting. We both wore blue jeans and flannel shirts. I was glad we arrived a little late because then we did not have to interact with anyone before the meeting. Bill interpreted in detail all the things I could neither see nor hear. Although I did not fully understand what was going on, I was impressed by two things: The speaker frequently used the Bible, and the children, who sat with their parents, actively participated in the meetings. After the meeting, far from being pressured, we were warmly welcomed, in spite of our clothing and different racial background.

We were the only two white people in the Kingdom Hall. Although I was not aware that I had any prejudice against blacks, I was initially uncomfortable being there. However, the message of Bible truth was too compelling to let my discomfort stop me. We started to attend the meetings regularly. Even more of a challenge for me was that there were no deaf people in that congregation. So when we heard about another congregation that had some deaf attending, we started to go there. Again, at this new congregation, we were the only whites in attendance. Yet, we were made to feel right at home.

We accepted an offer of a Bible study. Finally, I was getting answers to my questions. I did not always understand the answers right away, but they were Scriptural. With more research and meditation, I eventually got the sense of the Bible truths. For the first time in my life, I came to feel close to Jehovah as the true God. At the same time, Bill and I became close friends. I knew that he liked me, but I was surprised when he asked me to marry him. Happily, I said yes. Bill was baptized shortly after our wedding, and I followed him a few months later, on February 26, 1983.

Finding the Security I Sought
Initially I feared that I would be isolated because our congregation had only two other deaf people and they were not adept at communicating with someone both deaf and blind. I could tell that our congregation was loving and warm, yet I could not at first communicate directly with them. This saddened me. Many times I felt discouraged and lonely. However, a kind act of a spiritual brother or sister would touch my heart and lift my spirits. Bill also encouraged me to persist in my ministry and to pray to Jehovah to bring more deaf people into association with the congregation.

I decided to get a guide dog so that I could be more independent. The dog also helped to dispel my feelings of isolation. When Bill was at work, I could walk to the Kingdom Hall to meet the group that met to share in the Christian ministry. Over the years I have had four guide dogs, and each has been like a member of the family.

Although a guide dog was helpful, I longed for more human contact. In time, Jehovah blessed our efforts to develop interest in Bible study among the deaf. The interest grew to the point where a sign language congregation was formed in Washington, D.C. Finally, I could communicate with each member of the congregation!

Bill qualified to serve as an elder and was appointed the presiding overseer of the sign language congregation. I found great pleasure in conducting Bible studies with other deaf and deaf-blind people, a number of whom are now serving Jehovah faithfully. I also tutored hearing sisters in sign language so that they could be more effective in the deaf ministry.

A Time of Testing
In 1992 major depression that was associated with the abuse I suffered as a youth overwhelmed me. For a couple of years, I could barely function. I felt handicapped—not by my deafness or blindness—but by my intense emotional turmoil. Many times I did not think that I could bear to go to the meeting or out in the ministry, and I would beg Jehovah to give me the strength to keep integrity. As a result, I rarely missed a meeting, and I remained regular in my ministry during those dark years.—Matthew 6:33.

In 1994 we moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to help with the formation of another sign language congregation. The move was not an easy one. I left behind a familiar city with many dear friends. Even though I was still not over the depression and anxiety, the joy of seeing a new congregation formed in Vancouver made all the sacrifices worthwhile. I made dear friends in the new congregation, so that it came to feel like home.

Blessed by Our Loving Father
In 1999 my husband and I and two other Witnesses visited Haiti for six weeks to help in the deaf ministry. Working in conjunction with the branch office of Jehovah's Witnesses there, we taught a sign language class to the members of the congregation and preached with them in the relatively untouched deaf territory. In a few weeks, over 30 Bible studies were started with interested deaf ones! I returned home with renewed spiritual vigor and began the full-time ministry as a pioneer in September 1999. With the help of Jehovah, my dear husband, and a supportive congregation, bouts of depression have not robbed me of joy.

Signing into my hand
Over the years, I have experienced how tender Jehovah is in affection. (James 5:11) He takes care of all his people—but especially those with special needs. By means of his organization, I have been able to receive the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures along with many other Bible study aids in Braille. I enjoy conventions and assemblies in sign language. The congregation lovingly supports me by tactile interpreting, signing into my hands, so that I am fully included in all the meetings. In spite of a double disability, I have found security among Jehovah's people. Not only do I receive but I can also give, and this gives me great joy.—Acts 20:35.

I look forward to regaining both my hearing and my sight in Jehovah's new world. In the meantime I am not one of the loneliest people in the world, but I have a worldwide family of millions of spiritual brothers and sisters. All this, thanks to Jehovah, who has promised that he will by no means leave me nor by any means forsake me. Yes, in spite of all the challenges, I can say: "Jehovah is my helper; I will not be afraid."—Hebrews 13:5, 6.

With my husband, Bill, today
