What is going on at Gally!!

Dino's right.......there's actually a webpage out there by the adminstation, saying that the reason why Jane isn't popular, really has nothing to do with ASL and Deaf identity, it's more her administraive skills.

link please?

I spoke to a friend of mine who works at Gally. She told me that the students threw apple juice and spit on King. Also told me that there were feces on SAC floor because they didn't want the Board to change the name of the building of SAC from SAC to King University Hall something like that.

Its Student Acamedic Center became I. King Jordan Acamedic Center and Washburn Art Building became Linda Art Gallery, resulted, all students are very rage included some staff, faculty, and alumni...

I heard it too, but I think it is not true. One story said orange juice, another said water, another said... My understanding is nothing was thrown at them.

U heard some story and the fact is someone threw apple juice at Linda Jordan, none else (spit or water or any bs)

my brother sent me a link about gally and ask me what was going on and i explain to him oh boy

I'm more oral than signing myself and I was in Gally in 1998 and 1999.. Didn't feel very welcome becuase i didn't share the Deaf culture views that were present. So i stayed only one year and then left. Plus Most deaf people were very rude and anti-oral.. whereas there was a group of us who grew up oral. So I just didn't go back.

I am hoh and I do use my voices alots. screw them for who said turn your voice off and radio etc off? They cant tell me what to do. They are not my boss, period! jeez! I wont stop no matter what. It is my choice if I wanted to or not. :D

I asked close friends who went to Gally before and they said it was due to lousy academic skills and how to run Gally etc. Apparently not cuz of who she is. thats what i was told. :)

Immature ....... Shame on them. Students, staff and faculty can choose to leave Gallaudet .. to find the other school, work ... I am an Alumni. I am neutral and very disappointed in hearing the nasty news.

I'm aslo neutral on this and a bit dismayed by the events.

I guess not much has changed since my MSSD days. *sign*

they are angry because they name their name after a building which shld be decased or something like that but they felt that they name after a bldg without a reason. Its not just because they are angry for no reason.
They are angry with Jane BECAUSE of her lack of respect with students and staff and whoever at Galladuate. She have been lying to people numbers of time and she didnt want or havent show any proof that she WANT to work with us. She simply want to TAKE OVER with her ideas and everything. She show clearly that we are nothing to her. She simply push or sweep us under the rug. Thats not right. We've been putting in alot of our history and everything in Galladuate and NO WAY it will be wipe out. NOT just because we "HATE" hearing or whatever u think it is. WE CHERISH our culture. Thats it! Simply reason.
The whole point is.... JAne DIDNT show any feeling or concern or anything for us at Gallaudate so why should we keep her as a president? We need a president who WILL do something, SHOW us the concerns, caring, AND the most important is RESPECT. Thats all. Really.

I can understand that. But the way they are behaving is inappropriate...throwing juice at somebody, putting shit on the floor, spitting...

their behavior is not approiate that I can agree with. Theres nothing i can do about their behavior but I do root for the protest in order to remove Jane as a president. That's all.
People chose to act that way there is nothing we can do. I dont care or whatever they do. All I do care is to get Jane off the chair as a prez thatsall

I heard few students will withdraw from Gallaudet if BoT still refuse meet students' 3 demand...

Gally is ALL over the news here in Washington. Channels breaking in about the protest.

I did not understand why they do protestors again. I got email from a friend of mine.

Letter to Gallaudet University Parents and the Public
10/06/2006
8:44 a.m.

Plea for Peace

I am deeply saddened to be writing this. I started protesting because I
saw the need for social justice. Now I am making a plea for the safety
of my fellow students and myself. When did it turn from a plea for a
peaceful protest for social justice into a plea for safety?

Last night, in response to the Board of Trustees' decision to not
respond to the protestors, students decided to take over Hall Memorial
Building (HMB), which is the main classroom building, and lock it down.
Our goal was to get the attention of the Board of Trustees, to open
their eyes, and to finally address the serious problems on campus.

At 8 a.m. this morning, as students were sleeping in the SBG office, on
the first floor of the already locked down HMB, officers from the
Department of Public Safety (DPS) stormed in. Students were terrified,
people were running everywhere, screaming. DPS started pushing and
hitting students and threatening to spray mace. Some people were
assaulted. Students who had been peacefully asleep, and abruptly awoken,
were not resisting. We did nothing.
The attack from DPS came totally unprovoked.

Once DPS officers left and we were able to collect ourselves together
and survey the damage, we found several students had been hurt. We had
been physically assaulted by the Gallaudet University Department of
Public Safety. I cannot explain the state of mind we are in at this
moment. We are shocked, extremely upset, and hurt bodily and
emotionally. This attack from DPS was totally unprovoked. Students were
PEACEFUL. This protest was always about peaceful, nonviolent messages.
Who made it violent? The very same people who were supposed to be
"protecting" us. Who is protecting us now? It is sickening to know we
are not safe here at Gallaudet and that those charged with our safety
are actively causing harm.

GALLAUDET HAS MADE IT VIOLENT. Please know this. Inform parents. Inform
the public. I cannot explain how saddened I am to say this, but I have
to. Parents have the right to know that their children are in danger.
We have been physically assaulted. Students are terrified of what has
and still may happen to them. The level of FEAR and HYSTERIA set in
place by administrators who ordered DPS to use physical force on us, is
intense.

At this moment, I am making a plea for Gallaudet University
administrators and campus police to be civil to the protestors. I plea
for the Board of Trustees to listen to us. This will not go away by
ignoring the issues. This will not go away if you frighten us with
physical violence. It will only get worse and worse. I am making a plea
for PEACE and SOCIAL JUSTICE. NOW.

Sincerely,

Leah Katz-Hernandez

The parents are extremely upset and worried about their children who are entrolled at Gallaudet this fall. They want the tuition money refund 100 percent. It is not safe the environment on the campus.

Yea, I did read some deaf blogs abt parents are very upsetting with their children at Gallaudet same time feel not safe since DPS assault one students and physical on some students...

I want to support the students on this issue... if the president isn't working in the best interest of the students, there is a serious problem. I hope it gets resolved for the best to both sides.

About the other topic that sprang up concerning people not being welcome at Gally, that is a touchy case. First off, it appears to be hypocritical because the students at Gally University are fighting for a president who welcomes all types of people and doesn't shut anyone out but then the students (not all, some) shut out oral/hoh/hearing/cs/wtvr who don't perform to the Deaf level of ASL.

What needs to be understood by people who feel or felt shut out is that Gally itself is a protest to the rippling effects of the 1880 Milan Congress which had a delayed effect in America. Deaf schools across the nation are either focusing on oral. Some are even getting shut down. The culturally Deaf student can't help but see it as an attack on manualism (signing in education as opposed to oralism). When you have such a culture as Deaf culture whose binding tie is its very own language, anything that diminishes the proliferation of that language is equivalent to diminishing the culture itself, so the Deaf student at Gally might reasonably see anything less than "Deaf" ASL as an insult and an attack on Deaf culture.

No, it's not your fault that you learned SEE/CS/Signed English/PSE/voicing/oral/wtvr, and no, they don't have the right to tell you your signing isn't good enough or to say that you're not good enough, but they're not saying that. They don't hate you as a person bc of your signing or Deaf involvement but they hate that America still hasn't come to re-embrace ASL as a "proper language" for Deaf education in America. It's so deep-rooted that some may not realize the reason for being upset with another person who signs PSE or wtvr, but don't take personal offense to it.

I am not defending the attitudes prevalent in Gallaudet U - I have felt the same prejudices here in Austin, Texas - but I wanted to give an insight into why Gally seems to cast people out. For those people who will go there in the future, don't be discouraged by the few who will igore you. Stick around, find the friendly Deaf people there and ignore those who haven't yet realized that, once they leave Gallaudet, the world just won't bend to their preference. I hate to admit it myself, but regardless of your language preference (and I'm not being oppressive, my language preference is ASL), society demands bilingualism in Deaf/deaf people.

I just wanted to provide a new perspective on this old argument. :)

Few hours ago, DPS announced some building has bomb threat and wide campus (Gallaudet, MSSD, and KDES) are closed till futher notice, now DC police are here with 5 K9 dogs to checking all building and at front gate of Gallaudet are closed, so am working overtime now :(

Do you expect me to believe that Jane was not being respectful to the students of Gally? What about how Jane feels when she is not getting the equal respect from them either. Why is it always about those deaf students, Are their feelings are the only ones that counts the most? What about how students been treating other students who are hard of hearing, individuals with cochlear implants, individuals who speak, or went to a different school. I don't see no respect for them, So you expect me to sit here and believe it has nothing to do with Jane, how she was raised being oral and learned sign language late in her adult years? They only want her out because of lack of respect, not showing the courage to care about them? They should practice what they preach, they're the ones who are being judgmental.

I've read so many web site regarding about Gally and it's future President, Some would say that Jane doesn't fit to be a President because she is not a deaf image like them, having deaf parents, raise with strong ASL. Some had said that the students voices were not being heard by the Board of Trustees. There are a lot of people who are telling different stories about the campus protest and why they don't want Jane to be the President of Gally. So, I am not convinced for the real reason for the protest.

Oh god...I'm SO glad I did not go to Gally for college...geez. This whole thing is GETTING OUT OF HAND.

Yea, you are lucky.

I'm glad that got good choose about NTID instead of Gallaudet because great school for web/graphic design and VR don't recommended me go to Gallaudet because it goes more worse and worse, and that no fun with stupid protest and Jane is full of crappy job.
