For adults who were BORN deaf & transitioned from HA to CI

On a scale of 1 - 10 with 1 being poor and 10 being excellent, how would you rate your hearing with a HA and how is it now with an implant?

This is only for adults that were born deaf and wore HA for years before moving onto an implant please, as I need experiences similar to my own :)

What? Seems straight forward question.
I know a couple friends who got CI with that history, getting rid of tinnitus was one of the main reasons. I never asked them how it compared to hearing aids though Another i know grew up oral worth hearing aids then had to get CI when his hearing got worse and he did really well. It usually is a lot of work though. It's not like just stepping up to more powerful hearing aids.

Also unlike hearing aids the result is hard to predict even with 2 people with identical/similar histories. One does great and the other finds it near useless

What?!?!? No "OMG YOU"RE ATTACKING THE CI!?!?!?" post about this comment? Seems like when I say something like this, I'm automaticly attacked, but when someone else says something like this it's let go....

Maybe because you are on the CI/HA board and no one here really wants to hear "learn sign language"....:D

I still don't understand get post, but I'm thinking I need to go make popcorn for this thread?

I don't see my post as attacking or supporting CI. Rather giving info to actually answer the OP's question.
Now there is a novel idea.
 
sono has two CI..

For your question, My hub was born profoundly deaf. He wore HA for many years since he was a toddler. He started wearing CI in a late 30s. He said he hear more frequents than HA so i think you will be FINE. What my hub said, important thing is that you have to focus on sounds and figure out what the sounds make out of it if you can do that then you can.
 
Hi guys,

I am aware that it's not like getting an even more powerful hearing aid, and that the results vary.

When I say 'for adults born deaf' - I mean anything from being born with a mild/moderate/severe/profound loss - any kind of hearing loss that you were born with that required hearing aids from a young age, be it communicating through oral or sign language.

I'm just looking for general experiences. my brother was born profoundly deaf and wore hearing aids until he was 24 before being implanted. He says his hearing aids was about a 3/10 and he hears better with an implant and says it's about a 7/10. I'm just looking for how much improvement you generally got in your hearing via an implant, after wearing hearing aids. I am of course, aware that implants don't work well for everyone. Just curious to know how much better or even worse your hearing was after implantation after wearing HA, that's all.

Good point you made and I agree, normal hearing you can just hear and understand. Same when I had hearing aids.
When I got CI's I now have to actually actively listen to something and focus on it to to be able to understand. Otherwise it's all just noise that blends together.

You might compare it to hearing person learning a foreign language then being in a group of several people speaking that language. You really should have to listen carefully to one speaker to understand what they are saying and you would probably miss understanding what others are saying around you.

seems to be pretty accurate. We've all read success & failure stories.

The reason you feel "attacked", DeafDyke, is because for the majority of your posts, you preach with information you have absolutely ZERO experience in. I (and probably most of us on this board) find it difficult to take any of your posts seriously.

You cant claim no one wants to hear about sign in this sUbforum we do not know what people want or are seeking or even if they know ALL the options, until they come.
This is open to all people. It is all deaf..wether you like it or not

Whoa!!! I gotta agree with Hoichi, that you are the one who brought up about sign. we all can share our opinions in HA or CI why???

I have HA. My hub has CI. we BOTH sign.
 
I feel like I am asking a straightforward question - if not on a scale of 1 - 10, how much of an improvement have you all had with your hearing after transitioning from HA to CI?

I understand that they are totally different ways of hearing but if you were born with any level or kind of hearing loss that required HA for years before receiving an implant, any experiences of what was better hearing wise or even worse hearing wise would be appreciated.

Oh give me a break! I am not hoichi. All I want to know is that when I say that people's responses to hearing technology (whether it be CI or HA) varies from person to person, I'm attacked b/c apparently I sound like Sweetmind, or a completely anti CI or HA person.
Someone else says the exact same thing I do, and nobody comes out on the attack? Oh lord.
 
Off topic, but I gotta say this.
I wear HA's; have had them since age 6, and I must say, sign is setting me free. (Hoichi, you can jump in at any time, now) I never have problems with sign, but spoken language is a huge challenge for me. Personally, I want to ditch my HA's and establish myself as a Deaf man. I wear earplugs to eliminate hearing for the sake of immersion in ASL. I find many hearies' attitudes toward the Deaf/HoH quite insufferable.

My hearing with CI is in the normal hearing person range. I hear everything even the rub of my skin when rub finger together.

I was diagnosed severe to profound deaf at 9 months became so profound deaf that hearing aids stopped being effective at 9 year old. Got CI when I was 13.....

I still miss my hearing aids. I honestly understood the noises better with analogs. I do not regret getting CI however I dont use it. Its just too noisy. I hear CI technology is more advanced now with more realistic sounds than what tech I have now.
