meanwhile... UPS and FedEx are raking in revenues

I don't mean to butt in but they haven't even removed Saturday mail yet. They delivered our mail this morning. All that has happened thus far is the USPS has announced PLANS to remove Saturday delivery. Also UPS/FedEx does not charge .47 cents to send a letter. They are two completely different animals.

Don't get me wrong. I'm with Tousi on this one but maybe a bit more extreme than him as I think they should only deliver the mail three times a week. I also say that they should remove bulk mail from their services. They give businesses huge discounts for sending massive quantities of mail (much of it heavier than a standard letter) through them.

right. like they said - eliminating Saturday delivery will save them approximately $2 billion.... that's really nothing compared to its mounting debt.

right. and there's a reason why USPS is suffering. 47 cents is simply not sustainable and if they're gonna keep it that way at 47 cents... then they'll need to start doing something about it. I'm seeing a lot of wasteful spending.

Yea, that is how I see right now and really fumes me so much when hearing during stupid election drama one politician blaming other politician for having job sent to overseas. That is just small drop of truth. That is how I recognizes them as liars.

There will not even a single person to blame to for this mess but to blame industrial revolution back then that started the mess. Don't get this wrong, it does have benefits and pitfalls.

I think there will be widespread of automated machinery will happen to industrial places. Who builds those cars on the roads? Machinery put them together, they are faster than humans. Many industries have machinery to make things for us.

Like DHB pointed out, automated is cheaper than humans to do the work. It's only a matter of time in future that machinery will take over human's jobs in factories/industrial plants.

So who is to blame for this? There's plenty to blame - booming technology, rising healthcare, employers wanting to save money for business. The list goes on. It won't be long for most workers won't have a choice but to look for another non industrial jobs where they need humans to do the work. They'll need few workers to maintain those machinery and to inspect their productions.

Pretty sad reality of the future.

Yup, that is right. Other job I had before Sorenson, they have redesign their warehouse. I had been in both old and new warehouse and the difference was automation. The new warehouse, almost NO one is walking around the warehouse compare to old one where 3/4 of employees walks around fetching orders. Ever since then they don't hire as much as they used to be, and effectively cut from 3 shifts to 2 shifts and end the weekend shift along with OT as well. No more OT, no more additional workers needed.

And ready for this? The new warehouse already have zip code automatically sorted out for shipment so that shipper don't sort them out to get deep discount from the shippers passing down. The new warehouse is rather HUGE than older one. Its the bar code or bullet code and the scanners that does all the dirty work.

Anyway, the other day I was watching "How did they do that?" I think, not sure if right one but point is that one of them shows Coca~Cola bottling system. It is almost 100% automated, seriously almost 100%, all guy had to do is plug in the feeder and watch 2-liter bottle filled at 2,000 bottles per minute! And cans, sheesh about 3,000 per minute. Both of them have their own automated QA system, no human involved for inspection and they do scan with 99.99% accuracy and kick out bad ones even with aluminum cans (Top even closed) where if they not filled to right level kicks out. The place is so huge but almost no one is around, gee!

Automated package and pallated with shrink wrap done automatically even fork lift automatically lifts and move to destination ready for shipping. So, that is kinda of scary where basic labor will eventually no longer needed and one need to have brain to get a job that deals with automation or else I don't know yet.

Amazon is using a state of the art sorting system now. I was watching a Doc on it right before Christmas. They said it will revolutionize mail sorting soon.

The USPS had several years to try to fix the problem with money issues only raising stamps few cents at a time. They couldn't even raise stamps to $1 or $2 to maybe $5 they couldn't catch up with the debts they have.

Here's some interesting stamp cost history going back to 17th century.

Just to tell you that stamps were increasing very slowly til the last decade begin to increase steady but still bleeding money. Also note that the price of stamps dropped significantly before civil war when steam trains took over with the mail transport making things faster and less dependent on horses.

Dunno if this is interesting but I noticed the postage in 1782 was 6 cents for up to 30 miles and then 70 years later it went down to 3 cents, no distance limit in July of 1863 and then three months later in October down to 2 cents.

Its the technology is what killed USPS in some way, I am not sure if this is true but USPS had the idea of E mail, tried to sell the concept of E mail back during mid 80's I think and after 6 months trial, decide it is not profitable so sold to MCI, after that the mailing had reduced and never back to where it was before that time.

The difference is we had 2 currencies at the time. The South had their own currency AND their own postal service. Very likely this drop was currency manipulation.

It's the first time I've seen a board specifically state that. Removing that privilege can only contribute to us acting as sheeple when government imposes whatever they like on us. We need to be able to discuss THEIR actions. Ask all the whys, wheres, whats, whos, and hows. Not being allowed to challenge their actions among our own peers reeks of oppressive communism in the worst way.
