Does anyone else feel like their life was ruined by mainstream school

im lucky that im not at a mental hospital today, mainstreaming was so bad, that it nearly made be an autism, simply because i was bored and lonely with over active brain and under socialised...terrible terrible!!!

Mainstream school, The isolation can get pretty bad, Drives you nuts. But that's the only downfall for me. I didn't have to watch my back, I didn't have to worry about getting bad grades because somebody heard some bs rumors about me.. I could relax and not worry about the principal staring me down or calling me names. Sure the Interpreters to teacher thing can be confusing but it worked well for me.

Just shows that everyone's experience can be different than another's. The way schools are run can vary so much from place to place. It's good that it worked out for you, for the most part.

I would have liked the mainstream approach if I was also there with other deaf/hoh students. It's the isolation thing.
 
Exactly, Not all the deaf schools are the same. It all varies and Some people have different needs/lifestyles that maybe just didn't fit in certain schools. Yeah.

Why though? What's wrong with the Deaf school. i'd like to know your POV (no not like that Ha ha.)

how I felt from being mainstreamed

It took long time for me to get my high school diploma but it was worth it but for me i went mainstream schooling even though sign language my first language. I know some English but not is well so took ten years for me for high school even though I went 2 schools and my first school was good I had itinerant teacher in the deaf program at my special needs school then final 3 years i went adult education to finished but it helped me but slowly, but I know sign language is first language but I think its helped me to communicate but its been such long time and i wish i could had my life in the directoon with what I want to do now since i almost 25 but its okay :) but yes it is isolating since when I went to adult education for 3 years it was very isolating although I did still have Iitinerant teacher... but my life is good :)

Doesn't Oregon have regional dhh programs? I also thought that Oregon School was pretty good, and even had a lot of HOH kids too.
How come you didn't take mainstream classes out of OSD?
Kinda sad that you had a negative experiance.............everyone's experiance is different.....On the other hand, do you think the problems could be reformed? Also would you say that OSD is good for kids who fell through the cracks in the mainstream, and kids with mental disabilty?
 
I do have to say that I think MANY kids can benift from a dhh formal program......it sounds like you're one of those kids.
 
I am not quite sure about DHH programs around here. There are not many resources/assistance that are around here, or adveristed at least.

It is a good school for people that is struggling with certain subjects. I passed everything with flying colors so it wasn't the right school for me. There are only about 50 students at OSD currently.

It is pretty bad. Ever since the old school director got fired for allegedly trying to cover up a few sex scandals that happened at the school, She was a good director nonetheless. she made the school run smooth and made sure the students were focused on the school work. When she resigned, the school went downhill. It is literally a playground for the older ones now.

I truly think it can be fixed, the Only way in my opinion for that to happen is if the High school principal and the Current School Director resign. I have heard everybody's opinion on them in the school.

OSD in the other words is good for people with Learning disablities or Mental disablities. I have seen some students with those issues thrive there during my stay.

I am not bashing, just saying my opinion. :ty:

Only 50 students? That is SMALL!!!!!! That's smaller then a lot of blind schools. I thought there were at least a hundred students there .The links I have found say that there's over a hundred kids there. .....but yeah when you get the smaller deaf schools, you do get more kids with multiple issues.....Does OSD have a special needs program? That might improve things.......
 
Yep, it went downhill the minute the new director entered the picture. She started to ban so many silly things based on her religion belief. We were not allowed to wear certain colors/ bandana/laces and so on. She can kick anybody she didn't like out and to home.

False adversting FTW. Yes they do, but the program/classes are not taught by a teacher that is specialized in special ed. They switch teachers around every now and then.

I'm not sure what you're asking me. I was never in a deaf school, so I can't say what is or is not wrong with it.

You're right, different deaf schools are different. Some are better than others.

I think a good deaf school teaches the same materials as every other schools... at the same grade level.

They say that deaf people can do anything but hear. Therefore, the can learn at the same rate as hearing people. If they can't, then the students are either too lazy to learn properly or the school isn't teaching the students properly.

I had a friend who taught at a deaf school. At that class level, everyone should know how many weeks there are in a year. What did his students say to him when he asked "How many weeks are there in a year?" Their logic was, "There are 4 weeks in a month and 12 months in a year... so that's 48 weeks in a year."

What about the fact that you're claiming that OSD only has 50 students, when everything online says it has over a hundred?

Where do you get this information?

This year, OSD has 63 students.
 
Me, that was the number last time I checked. It was around 50. So it have raised to 63 I see. Good for them! :)

I am not sure where in their page you saw that ...... they don't really update it often. But I don't see anything talking about 100 studeñts.

I was asking DD for her source of the inaccurate figures.

I hate to say it, but data aggregating websites tend to be out-of-date, or just plain inaccurate. Many of these sites don't actually do their own data aggregating, they just copy from the other competing websites (and who knows where those sites got their information). I wouldn't put a lot of weight on these sites because of that.

50, or 100. What difference does it make? If there was a point you were trying to make with 50 vs. 100, I totally missed it. Becomes moot, then.
