Decision is Made

Q: Does Medicaid cover cochlear implants?

Medicaid coverage and payment for CIs and related services differs from state to state. The federal government provides general benefits category requirements for the states, including early and periodic screening, diagnosis and treatment (EPSDT), which requires coverage of services and related prosthetic devices and durable medical equipment for children. For adults, however, federal regulations give discretion to states for coverage of specific devices and services.

I posted that link to interject some facts into this discussion rather than supposition. People wanting information deserve that.
I note the facts in red; CI is not necessarily covered for everyone. It varies by state. For adults, looks like "too bad, so sad." Also, if the Conservatives had their way, the coverage that does exist would be stopped, due to Conservatives feeling that government freebies are wasteful.

Have a nice day.

That's a bit pessimistic, but OK. Thankfully, neither party has a hold on this country lock, stock, and, barrel, so we won't see widespread bans on CI coverage. Also, as Grendel pointed out, there's always ways around insurance nonsense.

There is? Tell that to my sister, stuck with over $900,000 in medical bills from her late husband. They still call her daily. The bills are still there, even though her husband is not.

I'm sorry but I don't see where that is relevant to this discussion.

Actually, there is. You have the appeal's process. Many times, people give up because they know the insurance companies try to wear people down. There's also remedies for his sister's situation as well.

Ever heard of "where there's a will, there is a way"?

That applies to a lot of situations...

You have no idea what you are talking about. My sister contacted several people, including lawyers. You think she was stupid? He had terminal cancer. They had months to prepare. Good luck finding someone to insure you once you have gotten the terminal cancer diagnosis. Only in a dream...

Agreed. Thanks for pointing her in the right direction, even though she jumped off the path again.

Yes. Have you NOT been aware that healthcare costs are SKY HIGH now? They are going to try their best to avoid covering CIs b/c they are VERY expensive. They're going to start really cracking down on eligibilty for CIs, and forget about getting two except for the most generous plans. They're also going to cover the CIs with bare bones coverage....meaning rehab, upgrades etc are going to be out of pocket.

Yeah. They cannot collect from my brother in law any longer, so they are trying to force my sister to pay. Another good one; when he went in for chemo, he was stuck sitting in a chair/bed for hours while they administer the drugs. Guess what? He never sat alone; there were people from collections there to "remind" him that he owed them a great sum of money. Every single time he went, which was at least once a week, they would be waiting for him. A captive audience, he could not leave. I doubt it helped his recovery.

Not true.....conservatives are against wasteful spending. As a conservative I would no find a CI to be wasteful.

You have a bias regarding hearing devices. Not saying ALL Conservatives would be against CI, but would expect the majority to not approve.

What the lawyers should be telling her is to send a cease letter certified mail to each oh the creditors. A sample. Can be found on bend over.com assuming the site is still up. That stops the calls and letters ans gives her the upper hand if they don't abide. Then they have the choi ce of sue or don't sue. In a case where the patient is now deceased I think it's doubtful they will sue.

:hmm: I dunno. I will ask around.....I'm curious now. I would think most would support them but I could be wrong.

Like I said, "full tool-box" is subjective.

One man's crap is another man's treasure. :)

I agree 100%. With just golf clubs alone I have seen people use clubs that I wouldn't even use for weed digging yet those people played well with them. The tools one choose are pretty unimportant as long as the person is successful with them.

Again, not true. I'm sure you're aware that my Dad had cancer. He passed away in Febuary of stage 4, esophageal cancer, and, he was insured. He lived exactly 9 wks from diagnosis to his passing. We had WEEKS to prepare for his passing. Since his death, my mother still carries the insurance they had; only as a single beneficiary instead of the plan they were under.

As for the debt that was they incured, we're getting through things financially due to debt consolidation. Sooo, ahhh, there ARE remedies if you look for them.

Life is only as bleak as the person wants to make it. As I said, there is a way of around things. But, I digress, we were talking about coverage for CI and such...

I'm a realist and I know about health care in this country. I'm well aquainted with durable medical equipment and the like (something that the CI would fall under for insurance purposes). It's true that not all insurances cover everything right off the bat. A lot of times, you need to appeal the decisions made by insurance companies and Medicaid. And, sometimes, you have to do so many times to get coverage, but, it CAN be done. Barring that, there are ways to pay for HAs and CIs. There are foundations that will help. Voc Rehab may help pay for HAs. I know you know this. If there wasn't such help around, there would be many people who didn't wear HAs or have the CI because they simply wouldn't be able to pay for them. I know that is far from the truth.

There are a few relatives in my family ends up got stuck with the hospital bills.

some Deaf/Hoh are not eligible for either V.R. or any helps due to working earning that is over the limited even though they are in the middle class and not be able to afford. indeed, a few of them who rely on the technology such as HA or CI that they spend $$ on HA or CI than what they really need something else so bad but they would lose their minds without the sounds. tough.

He wasn't insured. Get it? He was laid off, his house payments and lack of income forced him to choose to go without insurance before he developed cancer.

Anyhow, enjoy your good fortune.

That's a separate issue, then... Has nothing to do with insurance paying or not paying for things. I'm sorry they were in that position. It's very unfortunate, but you sound awfully bitter about it.

It's still apples and oranges to what was being discussed.
