Service dogs for CI users and deaf people

^^ this kind of comment combined with the context being discussed is displaying that the deaf are inferior. And we all know what that is called in one word.

I'm deaf and CI user and I don't feel inferior at all.... Too bad for those who feels that way...

Don't act like such a big baby and stop trolling the thread.

Not really acting like a baby as much as I am stating my opinion. What people are doing is implying that the deaf can't survive the nights without a service dog. But really, do we even need service dogs with all the technology has to offer? for what??

I wouldn't mind having a hearing dog... my lab (RIP) use to alert me to sounds, like someone nocking on my door, my nephew crying, people saying my name when my back was turned, and other things. I didn't train her, she just instinctively knew what to do. I have only met one other animal, who I wanted to take home but couldn't, who would do the same thing for me... he would nudge me when the bell at work went off or if someone walked in without it going off. His current owner said I could have him, but I can only have two animals at my apartment complex. I watch him on a regular basis, and love him to pieces... I would love to have another dog that would do those things for me, because it would give me a lot more confidence walking around on my own.

Also when I was younger my family wouldn't let there be any sign that I couldn't hear in the house... no flashing lights, nothing... and living in an apartment complex, the only "accommodation" that I have right now is a smoke detector that flashes... without my HA's on (which is most of the time at home) I have no clue if someone is at the door or anything... unless my SO is home.

I'm so sorry for your lost...

Did you know there are visuals alarms systems that can help you?.... Although there's nothing like a dog's company...

That's your opinion and I respect that but for some people there's nothing like a dog's company, and that deserves respect too.

Don't get me wrong, dog ownership is badass. But to imply one is "disabled" and "has to have a dog to function" is a nono in my book.

service dog is not for "companionship". If they want companionship, they can go to any local shelter and adopt one.

Service Dog is a crutch for disabled person to help him function. I don't need that but I have a dog for companionship.

But if they want a service dog they can apply to get one and that's ok. At the end of the day a service dog not also provide a service but a companionship too.

But sometimes the hearings aids/CIs are not enough in noisy environments, I get lost in those situations and it's more difficult for people who only has one hearing device...
Um that is just a part of being hoh. How does a dog even help in difficult listening situtions? It's not a loop or an FM device or whatever.

I know I don't have to have a dog to function, and I am also not disabled, I just don't hear. I do think that a hearing dog, in the future would be beneficial to me. Yes technology has advanced, but we are still living in a hearing world, I am still working in a hearing world, and there are still things that technology can not help with, that a hearing dog can. there is no technology that I know of that will alert me to my name being said... or where a sound is coming from, or alert people that I don't understand them (unless I want to wear a button that says "hearing impaired" which to me is a BAD word). A hearing dog would be able to do these things for me... or at least help me. Also, hearing dogs, as with any service dog, are there to work yes, but also to be a companion to someone that the world around us sees as "different"

it's more for letting deaf people know about noise such as door bell, phone ringing, etc. I guess some people just couldn't bear the thought of not knowing something or somebody is there and the deaf technology products aren't just not good enough for them.

It's more of emotional insecurity rather than convenience.

Yes, but virtually EVERY SINGLE instance where youcould use a hearing ear dog, there's a subsistied....ie flashing light doorbells and phone ringing and stuff like that.

yea try telling that to them :giggle:

I guess it's a huge inconvenience for them to have a flashing light in all rooms :dunno:

People! you have to respect everyone's point of view! there's no reason to disrespect each others opinions!

I respect everyone's point of view, and up the stakes to tell everyone that we don't need a dog because we are disabled. My reasoning: We are NOT disabled.

If you want to feel dependent on a dog to do your daily thing - fine by me. It's just a thing I wouldn't do. I've lived on my own the past 14 years and get this; I currently don't have any alerting devices or animals. I'm doing just fine.
