Learning disabilities.

Kristina, first sorry about the first long one before AD went down. ugh.

I think you are a good mother who gives a lot of times to be with your children and homeschooling them. i couldn't do it but you are doing it with your kids. that is so amazing with your disabilities and you are doing alright so far.Thank you!!

now you mentioned reading comprehsion problem. No one or teachers told me about my reading compregsion problem except i saw teachers wrote reports about me that i have reading comprehsion problem. I realize that I did struggle to answer the problem math solve questions when i was a kid. I am not a fan of those problem solve questions.

I suppose some teachers decide not to say anything to the parents about their children when children have problems. Like some kids who couldn't read and write received HS diplomas. I have a few friends who graduated as well as hubby, who can't read and can't do simple math. It's really sad.

I just figured that we are to do what we can with what we've been dealt. It hasn't been easy, but it makes a person feel good to know that they are doing what they can and moving forward. Daughter can follow a recipe and bake cookies or cakes. She works hard to match the measuring spoon or cup to the directions. She is also very careful to have everything ready first. We cover the cookbook page with plastic wrap, and she uses a dry erase marker to check off all ingredients and each step done. When finished, we just take off the plastic wrap and have a clean cookbook. Nifty, huh?

I have to focus when I read if it is a boring topic....I have read 4-5 pages before and then realize I have no idea what I just read. This happens when I read the book of Numbers in the Bible. Hope I don't get struck down for that

My oldest daughter has ADHD . If you had ever tried to live that way, I think you would be less flippant.

that depends on the extent of it but like what TXGolfer said - I do recognize the existence of ADHD but it is definitely over-diagnosed on overkill level.

I would say 90% of people diagnosed with ADHD isn't really ADHD... more like a common form of "bored-the-f***-out-of-your-mind" thing or just that some people learn it differently.... and 10% has a real case of ADHD that needs professional help and/or medication.

Yes I agree..

that's a bright idea about covering the cookbook page with plastic wrap. how clever. I should do something like yours for paperwork with my girl. :hmm:

cool. I usually print out a recipe and use a top loading sheet protector for binders

I have no learning disabilities but sometimes I do think ADHD is over diagnosed, I know many people who have it.

I agree. I think nowadays - people say it like it's a fad

I agree. my mom thinks some teachers didn't want to deal with mild hyper kiddos and order them to see doctor and get medicines. Like they asked me for my girl to see doctor. THANK god that doctor said that my girl did not have it but there is some similiar with ADHD that she has, but nah. doctor assures me that my girl will have to learn control herself by using "behavior therapy technique" but my own technique. Glad my girl's current teacher is more friendly than last year that she has good patience with my girl. I can see that she is doing better very very very slowly.

I read early and well and have what Bott said - the dyscalulia. Diagnosed in college after continually failing remedial math. I was diagnosed through Disabled Student Services at my college, with Division of Voc. Rehab. There are many kinds of learning disabilities, problems with reading and writing are just one type. I also have auditory processing problems un-related to peripheral hearing difficulty.

I agree with you. It isn't funny to have ADHD, I have it and it's really annoying. My mom and sisters always complaining and my teachers... were close to kick me out of high school.

I have ADHD and I am very sensitive to the fact that there are some people who will go too far to the point to say they think ADHD is too quick to diagnose.

I hope some people take the time to understand that ADHD is not a trip in the park. It took me this long enough to finally recognise that there are behaviour triggers and stimulants that overexcites my ADHD. I have to work extra-hard to make sure I don't associate with those behaviour triggers such as stress, over-excitement and even I have to make sure I watch what I eat.

Dealing with ADHD on a daily basis is hard enough. Those who deal with ADHD on a daily basis need support; not criticism or judgment.

I know that it is real and a struggle. I just believe that it is diagnosed too often.

It is a hard daily struggle. I am only thankful the my daughter is only ADD without the H. She is on no medication, just prefers to do things her way and that's why she has the bike rides or the jogging and running. Today, she clocked in a 5 mile run, then rode her bike for another 5 miles. Air pressure changes really affect her as well.

I'm dyscalulic too. I also have some social issues, but more akin to what LD folks deal with, rather then Asperger's.

I used to think the same as you.

I used to think that the medical field either misdiagnosed or was too quick to diagnose learning disabilities until I learned I had ADHD.

All I can say is that those who feel the same way as you do have no place sharing opinions like yours because you have no idea what we all go through.

Until you walk, feel, go through what we do on a daily basis; then you are free to share your opinion.

Wait until you have a child. If he or she should have autism or ADHD you will soon understand if you live with it, and you can't stop them from having it just by wishful thinking or telling them to stop.

I have no learning disabilities but sometimes I do think ADHD is over diagnosed, I know many people who have it.

It seems to be overdiagnosed especially in deaf children because of the communication issue between the pychologists who have little or no experience with deafness or Deaf culture. When the kids come to our program with all kinds of diagnosis from LD, AAHD, and so on but once they develop language, those problems identified by the staff at the public schools are no longer there. It just makes me wonder.

My brother was identified has having an emotional disorder but when he transferred to the Deaf school and learned ASL, he had no more outbursts in the classroom. After a year there, he no longer exhibited the signs of having ED.

I think the problem lies with language delays or difficulty communicating with those who arent skilled in working with deaf children.

However, yes, there are many who have it and their needs need to be addressed properly. It is not something to ignore and hope it will go away but just to really understand it. Punishing them is not going to help.
