What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

People constantly telling me to quiet down because I'm talking too loud. I can't help it because of my hearing deficit.

Scott

Hearies who use my hearing against me in a moment of anger, for example, purposefully not repeating or articulating better what they just said.

I get either...if I am not wearing hearing aids, people tell me to lower my voice. If I am wearing them, people tell me to speak up. I cant win.

I get both too. Seems like I talk either too loud or not loud enough.

I was at Olive Garden last night and mentioned to the waitress that I was deaf and needed to read lips as I didn't know sign language. Her response: "I'll just speak louder". Did she not listen. I ended up having my daughter acting as a "go-between" since she is, for the most part, very helpful to me.

I just end up writing things on my notepad. Waiters seem to be more accepting of this method than the waitresses since if you show signs that you can hear a bit, they talk louder. It's hard to train myself to ignore people's voices when i want to do the pen/pad method.

Souggy is right . Carry a notebook and pen always. Write out what you want in detail and hand it over to the waitress.

It works great.

I prefer to talk to them, but I am usually have a family member there to tell me what they say. Places I go alone, they know me and know I can't hear them.

That's weird. I wonder if it is legal.

It is under ADA. They cannot charge a customer with a disability or impairment for a service that is equitable to that of what a non-disabled customer would experience.

Basically, they cannot charge extra for CC. It has to be provided along with regular service. This is like providing no sound with the picture, but if a hearing customer upgrades, they can help.

That is what I thought.

There is a deaf guy that works at the Home Depot here. Hey carries a pad and pen with him. Everyone goes to him with questions because he knows the store better than anyone

you just made me appreciate my husband alot. He is hearing and want me to drive him everywhere but sometimes I prefer if he drive. He get somewhat mad if I want him to drive me everywhere. He expect me to drive for myself.

Just saw this while reading this thread again.

I'm glad I helped you appreciate your husband more.

I just recently started driving again. It is... the most freeing feeling I've ever felt in all my years on this earth.

Do you have any other providers of TV service where you live that might work with you?

No because I live so far out in the country it's either them or Dish Network, I was also told that maybe they just needed to explain things about how tv's work to me, this was the newest one. I am never going to get any help they just don't care.

I would tell them flat out what they are doing is illegal and discriminatory under ADA laws. They cannot make a deaf customer pay more for CC. If you can't hear, you need CC. Throw a fit, and keep having a fit until they meet the needs of their customers. I would also contact your local ADA office or ACLU. Get them involved and I am sure your dish provider will gladly give you the service instead of paying out money in a lawsuit.

I don't like when someone stops me and ask me "why you're not talking to me?!" or instead, "why don't you answer?" when I'm walking next to them. It's like... the worse thing to do! I can't hear (and sometimes I don't want to hear you!) so... it bothers me when they do that. So I have to stop my walk, look at them and try to understand them, it's annoying. About the talking too loud, the same happens to me lol

I'm going to carry a pen & a pad, because hearing saleswomen/men always talk looking at the floor or somewhere! can't read their lips, it's frustrating.

BTW, what CC means? :( don't know!

CC= closed captions. What you read at the bottom of your tv screen. You must have them in Peru?

Thanks, sometimes it helps having someone say this isn't fair also. And, I am definitely calling them Monday doing exactly what you said I know it will work this time. If at first you don't succeed try, try again, forgot that little motto. Directv won't know what hit em.:ty:

2. How a lot of people who can hear are very ignorant and seem to think that you're "retarded" because you wear hearing aids.

Year 7 teacher: "She can't possibly be intelligent- she's wearing hearing aids!"

grrrrr.............
