What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Botti, you have my support and understanding. You and your dear husband are so nice to have treated her with the respect she so obviously did not deserve. (yah everyone should be treated respectfully, I know)
Reference was made to her age, etc. There is no age barrier for stupidity or rudeness. What a horror of a person. How miserable her life must be to feel the need to treat others so meanly. Your husband is kind to have left this wretch with a tip. I agree that he is a wonderful gentleman. I know you dont like hugs, so here is a gentle gesture of comraderie for you..( Two friends sitting near one another on a warm evening, not speaking or really moving, just watching the beautiful, peaceful sunset)

:) That sounds like the perfect way to behave. :)

I'm not deaf but I know some people who are deaf and hard of hearing. What I don't understand is why people talk to people who are hard of hearing in a basically yelling voice. I know a guy who is hard of hearing and people yell at him and his hearing aids only pick up current tones, when I speak to him I simply add a little more lows and bass to my voice. Gauge the hearing of those who are hard of hearing it's not always necessary to yell. Also I assume people would agree why do hearing learners go to deaf events and not attempt to talk to deaf people? I'm hearing and I don't get it!

Bottesini I am sorry about this jerk of a waitress, but having been a waitress when I was 23 I can tell you the one way to hurt her without saying a word. Her tip, now I don't mean don't give her one, but I would say give her like, a dollar, enough to know you didn't forget, but enough to let her know she screwed up. Trust me she will remember the next time.

From my side though I had the luxury today of being told by my little girl's dad that my being hoh is hurting her development and maybe I should let her live with someone who could teach her right. If he weren't in Maryland and I was here, you wouldn't see this post I would be in jail for kicking his ass.

I don't care who you are just because you hear it does not make you right, I know. Look I heard much better as a youngster and it wasn't til my late 20's that it started getting so hard for me to understand the world around me. I was stupid in those years and look back and I go, would that I could go back. I can't and there are times I cry myself to sleep from the enormity of the job I have to do now to compete in a world I don't understand and deal with the hoh part of me that is newly accepting of it.

To all that have come before me, and I say this whole heartedly, you have my respect.

I don't even give them a dollar, I usually just leave two pennies.

My frustration of the week is when I was watching TV, and my mom refused to turn on the captions, and there is a lot of background noise. I gave up and went upstairs to my TV and turned on the CC up there. But of course by the time I did that I had missed what I was trying to hear.

To all do not get Directv unless you plan on going thru hoops if your hoh. Was just told that my satelitte receiver would not allow the CC on my tv to come up, but if I wanted to upgrade (at my cost) they would be happy to help me.

That's weird. I wonder if it is legal.

Lately, I havent been having issues with hearing people..I am starting to enjoy socializing with them (the nonsigners) again but it must be in small groups or on an one-on-one basis. I havent been minding having to read lips with them again. AS long as I dont go back to lipreading or oralism 24/7, I am ok with it every now and then. :)

I am not sure it is, but I have to work my way up through the ranks, and so far all I keep getting is the same thing. "If you have a problem you can upgrade". I guess they figure because I can talk on a phone it isn't that big of a deal, they have no idea that it's because I have a phone that is programmed to my hearing aid, and I had speech therapists teach me how to speak.

One more thing I just thought of what ticks me off about hearies. The hearies has monopoly on Deaf Education since 16th or 17th century and still do. Also they turned (and today to some extent) deaf ear (pun intend) on deaf people' complaining about the education and lack of ASL.

That will always piss me off and probably will for the rest of my life.

This happens with Dish Network as well. What happens with Dish is receivers will work the menu on certain (but not all) TVs. When that happens you can't adjust the captions on your TV you have to do it thru the box. But alot of SD receivers won't caption so you have to upgrade to an HD receiver. With Dish I just threatened to switch if they didn't upgrade me for free. They balked and threatened with the early termination fee. But ETFs are not binding any more. When I reminded them of that a tech came the next day with my new receiver. You could probably do the same thing with DirevTV.

Thank you for the idea I will contact Directv, I'll see how it goes. Thanks though.

Well, bad news, Directv told me that it was my responsibility to either pay $200.00 to get a receiver that will do CC or I could go buy a new TV, because they weren't going to do anything. I have made the decision to change companies to Dish Network, they said they would provide me a receiver no charge. I'm glad one would I was really beginning to wonder

Do you have any other providers of TV service where you live that might work with you?

Talk with the manager about it. That's inexcusable. The manager should comp you for it.

I'm glad Dish worked out for you. I have had them for 6 years. Good company. They also do all of their tech support by online chat which is handy.

At this moment, virtual hearies who come in here and ask for ASL help in the first post they make to help them sign a song.

Then throw a hissy fit when the rules are posted.

When I had DirecTV in Missouri - I had no problem getting the CC to work on all TV's.

I don't have satellite or cable now, so there's no issue. We use an antenna and the converter box and do well.
