Hi, I'm also a potter fan. My favorite Characters are Dobby, Hermione and Severus Snape. I just found him very interesting. Even though he's not a very nice character

How long did it take you to learn sign language as a blind person?

Were you born blind or become blind later on?

Can you navigate using echo location?

i agree, snape is interesting. i like dobby too.

I took asl 1 and 2 in high school, and i am now taking it in college, i wont be done for another year and a half. but i am pretty fluent already.

i was born blind, i have hypoplasia of the optic nerve, and nystagmus.

kind of, i can usually tell how far away something is with my cane... but if you ever heard of the clicking guy no.

i know who you're talking about when you refer to "the clicking guy." i think his name was brian, but i can't remember his last name. i saw him on oprah once.

we had a whole 2 seminars on him at an nfb center. he gets on my nerves, because, i dont know, i dont know how you do that by clicking... canes do echolocation decently... but clicking...

2 seminars? wow.

i also have no idea how he does it. i'm able to use echolocation with my cane, but can't imagine doing it with my tongue.

besides, i'd feel pretty silly walking around clicking my tongue all the time. :giggle:

well, the first one was watching the video, and some conversation, and we continued the next time. i would feel silly as well.

neither do i. like i said, i saw him on oprah and they showed brian walking down the street without a cane clicking his tongue avoiding parked cars, etc. i found it hard to believe.

one thing i DON'T like about all the publicity surrounding brian is the fact that if blind people see him traveling without a cane, they might choose to do so as well -- and that's definitely not safe. one of these days, brian is going to end up underneath a car because a driver didn't realize he was blind.

Thanks for answering my questions. What do you like most about ASL? Do you think you benifit from learning the language. I mean other then a carreer option?
