Interpreter's salary

I can fire an interpreter and request another for any reason I see fit. Perfectly within my rights!

:laugh2:

Normally, I wouldn't make such a statement about someone that I don't know, but based on all of jasin's comments....

You, sir, are an idiot.

It is not your place, nor your right to "fire an interpreter" as YOU are NOT the interpreter's BOSS! If you have an issue with the interpreter, you have the right to discuss it with your student service office of disability (or whatever your school calls that dept) and REQUEST, yes REQUEST, not demand another interpreter. At that time, your request can be discussed, including your reasons for wanting a different interpreter. Depending on your reasons, you may or may not get a different interpreter. They are not there to be your friend. They are there to facilitate communication. How much they are paid is none of your business. What kind of contract they have already set up with your school is also none of your business.

Your comments only show how incredibly ignorant, naive, disillusioned and ill-informed you are about both interpreters and the field of interpreting. Clearly you do not understand the role of an interpreter at all. your statements are so far-fetched and ridiculous that I wonder if you have ever even used an interpreter before. Perhaps you are bored and are simply making things up as you go along.

In any event, I would suggest everyone do as I plan to do. Ignore any other comments you make.

My two cents' worth.

ROFL Nice!! I love good interpreter jokes!! :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::giggle:

It was one of the better ones I've heard in a long time!

Since we are on this topic if interpreter's salary.....

I have a question.....if we are self-paying for the interpreter and I want to tip them, what is the tipping rate for interpreter's?

I don't care how much the interpreters get paid, I only care about the excellence service they are providing me. But, I missed one of my favorite interpreter, who is now working for sorenson :( She was one bravest interpreter ever that I've experienced with, she would tell the doctor, not to say "tell her this" and to look at patient when he is talking, not to her. She was an awesome interpreter.

Personally I would not accept a tip from any client, even if they were self-paying. Interpreters are professionals just like CPAs and lawyers - there's no need to tip an interpreter, same as any other professional.

What I do appreciate for a job well done is sincerely expressed gratitude. If you like an interpreter's work, say so! Most interpreters would not accept a tip, but all interpreters accept compliments. :)

Standard 15%. But ethics may prevent them from accepting.

Some of my students will offer a small gift of gratitude to a terp at the end of the quarter, particularly after Fall quarter when the holidays are coming up. Usually something like a box of chocolates, or a gift certificate to the Starbucks on campus.

exactly. TERPs are professional. Do you tip your doctor? dentist? My guess is no. If you have been working with your TERP for quite a while... a small gift like a box of chocolate or a mug cup is fine!

It depends. Yes, interpreting is a profession but sometimes clients and terps develop long-term relationships, and sometimes friendships outside the professional realm. When you interpret for someone several times a week for years, and participate in events at the culmination of those long periods, small tokens can be exchanged. I've gotten cards and small personal gifts at college graduations, weddings, and funerals. Maybe it's not the most "professional" thing to accept them but it's the gracious thing to do.

I have to agree with Reba, Jillo, and others...I have been to 3 different comunity colleges and a major state university and in all educational settings, I have never had to sign timesheets or anything related to my interpreter's payroll.

However, the same standards were practiced at all 4 colleges, if the class has been cancelled or I didn't show up for class piror to the 24 hour notice, the terps still got paid.

Same thing with the 2 hour minimum and the hiring/firing practices.

Interesting that this allegated college that Jasin attends requires students to sign the timesheets. That's new to me.

Actually I do tip my doctor and dentist.

For my doctor--it's usually flowers, for the dentist--sugar-free candy. :)
