tattooed terps

I hate to tell you this but it is impossible for any terp to be 100% accurate 100% of the time. Why do you think professional terps are required to carry "malpractice" liability insurance?

I don't know of any profession that is 100% accurate all the time, and that includes doctors, judges, police, teachers, scientists, and stock brokers. Human beings are imperfect.

Yes, I know that nobody are prefect but there're Interpreter rules in Germany to have no misunderstanding on this important issue like lawyers, courts, notary, agreement contract etc. It's interpreter's duty to make sure either she/he understand them correct or not when she/he feel unsure. The clients are happy to correct them with no problem.

We went to court last Thursday with an interpreter. She prepared with us and our lawyer 15 minutes before court appointment to avoid any misunderstanding in the court. She terp. for us with no problem. The Interpreter's duty to be prepare with their clients before important discussion with lawyers, doctors, notary, etc.

One member from other forum said last week that he lost case at court due misunderstanding from an interpreter. It's sad because Interpreter is suppose to make sure either he/she understand their client correct or not. He's not only one but some of members are also complaint, too.

We drove Danny to eye specialist clinic in Erlangen last year with an interpreter. She prepared with us with agreement contract before we sign until they confirmed no tumor on Danny's left eye.

There're alway be PREPARATION to avoid any misunderstand because this issue are very very very important to deaf clients.

We have no problem for any misunderstanding when there're parents conference, etc. because we know nobody are prefect.

Yes, I demand 100% when there're important issues like what I mentioned. Look at one member who lost case at court. Oh dear!

i don't care for tattooed interpreters. unless its on face. that is another entire different story.

ok, so just because i have a tattoo, i'm a slob?!?! it seems to me that after reviewing the replies here, the only people who have a problem with the tatoo are the interpreters and not the clients. i got my tattoo before i thought about interpreting. it's very important and significant to me. i'm proud that people can see it! :fu:

Yes, BUT EVERYONE is responsible to make sure they are understood as they wanted to be, not just the interpreter. YOU need to watch your interpreter and watch out if there is a misunderstanding, and it is YOUR responsibility to correct it. If the member want to blame the interpreter for misunderstanding, then he is denying his own responsibility to correct the situation and to complain about it. Be proactive about your situations! It is STILL impossible to have 100% perfection in any case, but it is EVERYONE'S responsibility to make sure they think they are understood right.

Yes, it´s right that it´s not just interpreter but everyone. That´s why everyone are prepare with interpreter few minutes before important appointment to avoid any misunderstanding. The clients are provide to stop interpreter ask for repeat or what´s this exact word mean if they are doubt to understand interpreter correct or not. Interpreter also do the same as clients, too.

Like what I say before that nobody are prefect but there´re alway be PREPARATION to avoid any misunderstanding before important appointment.

We all agree that preparation is the best to save misunderstanding and hassle. It would be bad if there´re no preparation with interpreter. It´s interpreter´s duty to be prepare with their clients and need to know what it doing.

It doesn't matter to me if the interpreters have tatts and pericings. The only thing that matters to me that they are good interpreter than a lousy one who thinks know sign language. Who gives a fuck if they have tatts and pericings. I have pericings and tatts. Big deal!!! I like people to not be scared to show it off and doesn't care what others thinks than some wussy!!! Who must think everything gotta be perfect.

Such a shame that you think tattoos make someone a slob! Tattoos take a lot of commitment to care and are expensive so we work hard to pay for them. They are just expressions of identity. I got tattoos to reclaim my body after assault, please talk with more tattooed people, we're decent clean humans.

Tattoos are NOT slovenly. They are self expression and healing for a lot of people. A person can have tattoos that can be covered up or not, their body, their choice. Who is anyone else to judge? We don't know their journeys. One terp that doesn't like tattoos is certainly not entitled to label all others for making a different life choice. The judgy individual is the REAL UNPROFESSIONAL. If the person they serve has tattoos, are they being judged?
Just wow. Some of this thread is sad to read. Thanks to all those who stood up against the negativity.

I feel if the client does not want to see tattoos the client needs to ask if the terp has them and if so, if they can cover them BEFORE hiring the terp. The decision of who to use should be made by the client that needs interpretation.

I find it ironic that professional Hearies find tattoos wrong and unprofessional, yet most Deaf are fine with them.
BTW to Margie, Dir of Comm Services, having a tattoo does not automatically make someone a slob. Many excellent interpreters and other professionals have tattoos. They are more common than ever before.
