Does anybody here have a guide dog for deaf? If so, tell me about it.

I am thinking of getting one when I move out in a few years. I think it'd be a great help especially since my hearing loss is progressive. However, am I "eligible" to get one. I am moderately to severely hard of hearing in my left ear and profoundly deaf in my right. I don't know much about this stuff. Do you have to be "deaf enough" to own a guide dog?

Sorry if my question is stupid. :aw:

I had a hearing dog and I had to send a copy of my hearing test He would let me know when the phone or door bell ringed , and smoke alarm or alarm clock went off. I had to train with him for a week before he could go home with me. Not all places train the same way , you really should find a place and start the paper work , it can take up to 3 years at some places to get a hearing dog. If someone already a hearing dog and it dies or retired that person could be first on the list. My dog was also trained to let me know if someone calling me from behind and he was trained to pickup things and pull my coat and socks off. He part of the prisoner training program and the guy training my dog didn't if I had other disabilities so he trained my dog extra stuff. I had a black Standard Poodle
the only problem with this is some people are really afraid of black dogs and this made it a little harder bring him places .

My hearing loss is not enough and they don't count apd, but I have trained a hearing dog before so I will be training my own hearing dog for around the house.

I got mine from NEADS and when Finlay dies from cancer I call NEADS and was told they were training dogs to be hearing dogs as much and it would be a long wait . They were training dogs to help wounded vets .

Thank you for the information. that is really helpful for me to know. Would the test be taken without any listening devices (hearing aid, cochlear implant, etc.) or with? :hmm:

With out it is just a standard audie hearing test and you take the results to disability and they decided if your hearing loss is great enought. In oregon it has to be past 60 htz, and then they will pay for a dog. Some states you have to pay into it also. Here we have one that you pay $500 wait a year for a dog to be trained and then when you have a dog that works you get the $500 back. Others are free, minus insurance cost.

Oh ok, thank you. I understand better now. I am a 50 in high frequencies and a 70 in low frequencies in my left ear, and 110 in my right, so I'm probably qualified to have one...

Do you already have a dog, some places won't let you have a hearing dog if already have a pet . Paws for a Cause is this way. It take time to get one so you should try to get the ball rolling , I tried to get a hearing dog years ago and I was told by one place they like to give hearing dogs to deaf and hoh parents first. I don't think this place is around anymore.

No, we don't have a dog. I asked my hearing specialist about the hearing dogs and we did look up sites such as paws for a cause. I'll start planning for one asap.
