Devils Lake Journal - Sports

Devils Lake assistant hockey coach David Zimmerman has been selected by the USA Deaf Olympic hockey coaching staff to be one of the assistant coaches for the 2007 games.

“It's a great honor to be selected to the coaching staff,” Zimmerman said. “I have had a goal to be part of it for a long time and it's a dream come true.”

This is Zimmerman's first year as a coach, but he has been involved at the Stan Mikita Hearing Impaired Hockey camp which is part of the process to select the deaf Olympic hockey team.

The 16th Annual Winter Deaflympic Games will take place in Salt Lake City on Feb. 1-10, 2007.

Over 400 athletes from 22 countries will compete in five different events: ice hockey, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and curling.

The USA deaf hockey team will play five games in eight days, starting with Russia, followed by games with Sweden, Canada, Finland and Germany.

“Canada and Russia will field good teams,” Zimmerman said. “The others will be much improved so we have to come with our "A" game no matter who we play.”

Zimmerman's goal is to bring back the gold medal, the U.S. got the bronze in Sweden four years ago.

“We were very disappointed with the results so we got a chip on our shoulders,” Zimmerman said.

The team will convene in Colorado Springs, Colo., in January for training prior to the games.

Zimmerman will be entering his seventh year as an assistant coach here in Devils Lake. Prior to coaching in Devils Lake, Zimmerman spent two years in Grand Forks and three in Minot.

“It's a relatively young team with a lot of speed,” Zimmerman said of Team USA, we are concerned with our goaltending situation so hopefully it will improve by the time the games begin.”

Jeff Sauer is the head coach, he use to be the University of Wisconsin head coach.
