THE Zambia Deaf Vision (ZDV) has commended Government for ratifying the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

ZDV executive director Joseph Mwaba said in a statement issued in Ndola yesterday that Zambia joins other countries that have signed the convention aimed at protecting the rights of the world’s estimated 650 million people with disabilities.

Mr Mwaba urged Government to domesticate and implement the convention.

“The persons responsible for activities related to education, poverty eradication, creation of employment and development should ensure that we, the deaf community, benefit,” he said.

Mr Mwaba has since urged non-governmental organisations that receive funding meant to benefit disabled people to sensitise the community on what the convention relates to and how disabled persons can benefit from the ratification.

He said his organisation will continue to be Zambia’s leading organisation for the deaf in the provision of advocacy and lobbying for inclusiveness, advancement and empowerment of the deaf.
