Youth sports organization earns grant to hire interpreters for deaf children | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

The Southeastern Program Of Recreational Team Sports (S.P.O.R.T.S.) just proved that when a tight-knit community comes together, it can accomplish big things; in this case, a $2,500 grant from Liberty Mutual Insurance, which they will use to hire interpreters for deaf players.

Parents, coaches, and program officials from S.P.O.R.T.S. -- a non-profit that offers character-building team sports experiences to Indiana kids -- earned the grant through a grassroots effort to get as many community members as possible to complete an online quiz on sports mentoring. The quiz comes from the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports Program, an online community found at Home - Liberty Mutual Responsible Sportsâ„¢ that helps adults maximize the positive role they play in young athletes' lives, through helpful blogs, videos, and curriculum. The program is a partnership between Liberty Mutual, Positive Coaching Alliance, and a number of national youth sport organizations.

"We really appreciate the emphasis Liberty Mutual places on responsible sport parents and coaches; a much-needed emphasis in society today," said Pam Johnson, development director for S.P.O.R.T.S. "In addition, we are thrilled that so many of our parents and coaches participated in the Responsible Sports quiz, which demonstrates their commitment to youth sports in our community."

S.P.O.R.T.S. is among an elite group of 20 youth sports organizations across the country that completed enough quizzes to earn the $2,500 grant.
