Ending weeks of speculation about which upcoming video game platform will give gamers the most bang for their buck, today at the German Games Convention, Microsoft Corp. revealed that consumers can get their hands on Xbox 360 — the most powerful and feature-packed next-generation video game and entertainment system — for as little as $299.99 U.S./€299.99/£209.99 starting this holiday season. For gamers who want to experience the ultimate digital entertainment thrill ride, Microsoft also announced a model with hundreds of dollars worth of accessories for $399.99 U.S./€399.99/£279.99, giving consumers the definitive entertainment experience at an unbelievable value right out of the box.

The Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Core System — along with an impressive lineup of high-definition game titles from the world’s best publishers and developers — will make their debut in North America, Europe and Japan in time for this Christmas holiday, several months ahead of the competition. Although details for the Japan launch will be addressed at the Tokyo Game Show in September, the unprecedented three-region launch signifies an industry first. The Xbox 360 platform will deliver the most powerful console, the best games, the next generation of the Xbox Live service, and amazing digital entertainment experiences never seen in console entertainment.

“The sheer entertainment value of Xbox 360 cannot be overstated,” said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft. “While the system has the muscle to power awe-inspiring graphics, audio and online play, it’s also got the intelligence to serve as a one-of-a-kind entertainment device that plays CDs, DVDs, MP3s and digital content from an array of devices, including portable music players and digital cameras.”

With its built-in Ethernet port and free Silver level of service right out of the box, Xbox 360 also connects players to Xbox Live, the premier global online console games and entertainment network.

With Xbox Live, gamers can chat with friends online, build and share gamer profiles, send and receive text and voice messages, and access Xbox Live Marketplace for new content such as game demos, trailers and casual games from Xbox Live Arcade. Subscribers to the Gold level of service will also enjoy access to online multiplayer gaming in their favorite games, as well as great promotional programs such as worldwide tournaments, the chance to play online with their favorite celebrities, and opportunities to win big prizes.

For gamers who want the ultimate experience (and the best value) right out of the box, Microsoft will offer the $399.99 U.S./€399.99/£279.99 Xbox 360 console. This premium edition — distinguished by signature metallic detailing on the console itself — comes fully loaded for the ultimate gaming experience, with components and accessories that would cost more than $200 if sold separately:

Xbox 360 console. Sexy styling that packs a punch — three powerful core processors are poised to pump out 720p/1080i output, 16x9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing for smooth textures, full surround sound and DVD playback right out of the box.
Xbox 360 Hard Drive (20 GB). 20 GB and detachable, the hard drive allows gamers to store their games, music, downloaded trailers, levels, demos and community-created content from Xbox Live Marketplace.
Xbox 360 Wireless Controller. Hassle-free high-performance precision wireless gaming features the Xbox Guide Button for quick access to digital movies, music and games libraries as well as a range and battery life of up to 30 feet and 30 hours of life on two AA batteries.
Xbox 360 Faceplate. The removable Faceplate comes in stylish “chill” (white) and can be swapped out with custom Faceplates to reflect gamers’ personalities or decor.
Xbox 360 Headset. This lets gamers strategize with teammates or trash-talk opponents while playing games on Xbox Live.

A bonus Media Remote: Included for a limited time, the integrated control center for the entire digital experience lets consumers play DVDs, movies and music, as well as access their Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005-based PC's controls with a single remote.

while I'm glad it's still the same price as the orginal Xbox came out when it first launched in November 2001...but there's just ONE thing I'm curious about...

will it still be able to play the orginal Xbox games? cause if it does, then I might as well trade in my old xbox for the superb EXTREME xbox. :P

M$ has stated that select XBOX games will be backwards compatible on the 360. I wouldn't trade in your XBOX just yet, espeically if you have a nice library of XBOX games.

"select"?...so you are saying it wont play ALL xbox games but just what it will play as it's on the "select" list? ooookay sounds abit stupid to me, no offense.

well I'll just wait and see what's new.

I'm reading on other forums that if you buy the regular system without a HD drive, you can't play XBOX games because a lot of XBOX games use the HD. I would pay the extra $100 for the 20 GB HD and wireless controller.

"Wolf declined to answer the first of those questions when we put it to him last month, but was more positive on the second issue, telling us that "our goal is to make ALL Xbox games play on Xbox 360, and at launch we'll have a selection of the top selling that will be tested and confirmed to work."

That guy better be damned right! but of course...if it didnt come out right, then I guess I would still have to keep my old Xbox then *sigh*

I've heard that Playstation 3 will be able to play most of the orginal Playstation games, Playstation 2, and obviously all Playstation 3 games...very damn powerful machine.

It's a good thing that Sony is going to make their Playstation 3 games be able to play on the Playstation 3 console. :applause: ;)

I surely would buy X360 packages for 399.99.. :)

pintnight, Yes you are right about all PS 1 and 2 games are full backward compatility capable on PS3 for sure without doubt,
But GameCube discs and even N64, SNES, NES games via downloads with emulation which can play on the Revolution.

PS3 and Revolution are tie! those what I read in OXM [offical Xbox Mag]: August 2005/ Issue #47

good or bad news for ya:

Hard Drive required for 360 backwards compatibility.

The issue of whether the Xbox 360 will be able to play original Xbox games has dragged on for so long now that, quite frankly, it’s getting a little boring.

Microsoft has confirmed a certain level of backwards compatibility, though details have been thin on the ground to say the least. Throwing some light on the question today are our women hating soon-for-jail-loner friends over at UKR who found this little gem buried amongst paperwork in their in-tray.

It’s a marketing brochure from Microsoft, reproduced in full to the right of this story and, as you can see, a hard drive will be required to play Xbox games on your 360. Exactly why this is the case is not clear, though we’re guessing that each game will require some sort of custom download from Live.

well at least I think most of the xbox360 will come with a HDD installed, right?

even the orginal Xbox comes with the HDD built in the console, so I dont really see why must there be two kinds of xbox360 with or without a HDD...so in my opinon, it's best to own a console with a HDD indeed...so even though it may be expensive but at least it gives you more than you expect.

of course I will be getting an xbox 360 with HDD possibly around $300 as the orginal xbox came with that HDD in it as well...hopefully, yes.

so, let's just wait and see as the story completely unfolds...summer's ending and fall's coming.

You were wondered Why 20gb for 100 bucks?

So, the 100 bucks 20gb HDD so expensive with the 299 buck standard x360 package?

Im pretty sure you acknowledge that 2.5in. 20GB hard-drives[as HDD laptop] are built for the X360!? the x360 drive is NOT IDE. correct me if im wrong but I know I read this somewhere...never mind....magically articles answered me already.

Think about it, most likely people wanted to buy the CORE do not know what they are getting and it really wont matter, because they are immature who just want a new system LIKE the young kids and immature teens who want a new system which is their mandatory.

think even about it, the hard core gamers educated me know the difference and will buy the delux 360 for 400 dollars instead of core system. I will all get wired and wireless controllers, remote, headset, everything that I expected from the next gen. And I wont have to deal with the ignorant gamers act like the young kids who do not know what they want.

MS just blew me out because the smaller laptop sized 2.5 inch hdd attached Serial ATA, NOT IDE anymore.. get it?

SATA Hard drive is what killed the Xbox's price.

This makes perfect sense and for 400 that a steal. DID you honestly think that the nex gen with all the great feature would cost 299?

CORE SYSTEM is USELESS: any person with a half a brain as 3/4 of a monkey brain will know the core is stupid and get the premium, its just that its deceptive to the person...

Remember that the HDD that will be in the 360 is the smaller laptop sized 2.5 inch hdd. They are more expensive than standard desktop hard drives. both arent 100 bucks for 20 gb, but more expensive than normal HDD.

NOTE: Get Delux system, because HDD, ONE WIRED AND ONE WIRELESS CONTROLLER, AND SOME OTHER ACCESSOSIRES for 399 bucks you spend all WORTH it! If you bought core system, there have wired controller not wireless controller, one or two accessoires that is it for 299 bucks.. You want buy HDD FOR 99 BUCKS, WIRELESS FOR 49 BUCKS LATER.. wait a minute---- what is waste?!

Good point CK. If I ever take the chance on getting the xbox360, I would take the premium version than the core system.

After all is done, if I bought core and the premium stuff, I'd kiss the extra 100 that I could have used for some games to go with the xbox360.

I have a feeling most of the xbox360 sales will be the premium version instead of the core version. Think of buying a xbox360 like buying a car comes to mind. Like M$'s plan , there are 2 or 3 versions of the same car. First one is a basic stripped with no options, the second car would have some options installed in it. The third car would be loaded with all the bling and gewgaws for a good price than if the stripped car was loaded with options separately.

KEEP IN MIND: the smaller sized HDD that built in the X360 console which is the actual laptop sized 2.5 inch HDD.

EXACT EXCELLENT POINT!

Like example, Lets keep running with the car analogy. An Accord LX and DX do not come standard with full elertric and leather, but an Accord Ex does.

You have making a choice which one an Accord come standard without full elertric and leather or an Accord Ex come standard with leather and full elertric?"

Hmmm...

I think I'll just get the core system with a wired controller, use a memory card to store games data, (even though I dont really feel that the HDD is that important to me anyway)and buy an universal remote to play DVDs and that's it...

call me old fashioned, but I think it's just easier and better that way since I'm just more into games than movies and music and shit so...

$299.99 seems like the most reasonable and best price I can afford indeed.

If you have an advice for me, shoot away.

Steel, if I was you, I'd rather have the HDD 'cause I want to play my original xbox games and the HDD is necessary as M$ has to provide emulator patches to enable the xbox360 to play the original xbox games. The patches will be available for download over xbox Live. I have a feeling both Halo games, Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2, Fable, Jade Empire, Crimson Skies, and some games published by M$ Game Studios will be the first to get patches for the xbox360 when it launches in the fall.

My strategy for the xbox 360 is to keep my original xbox but add the xbox360 premium version with the HDD and connect the xbox360 to my cablemodem router to download patches for original xbox. I'll keep it that way until say 75% to 100% of the original xbox games are backwards-compatiable with the xbox360. Once this is acheived, I can finally retire the original xbox and have the xbox360 play both the original xbox and xbox360 games full time.
