The name Logan was picked for James by Rose when her and James went into hiding after the "Howlett massacre". The Logans and Howlett's have a rocky history as shown in Origin. Thomas Logan together with Dog ended up killing James's father and James's mother committed suicide as a result of witnessing the crime and realizing that her second son also was "cursed" liked her first born. During all of the mayhem, the blame was put on Rose and James, so they fled and went into hiding. After years of working at a mine, Dog finally catches up with the two. Rose is eventually killed accidentally by James. James defeats Dog and is shown going deep within the mountains. End story.
As far as the Wolverine film goes - Dog is Sabertooth! Too make things more interesting, James and Dog are half brothers, which I'm keen on. I've always liked the concept of Sabertooth and Wolverine being kin.
