Good idea. If I ever get my plumbing fixed, I should buy a shop vac.
 
Cool. I'll have to try it the next time I drop an earring down the drain in the bathroom. For some reason, I can never remember to plug the sink first!:P

Plugging the sink is what I was taught to do when I was in blind rehab so that I don't have to worry about accidentally dropping small objects down the drain. If it weren't for my training, that never would have occurred to me.

You'd think after I lost about 4 or 5 earrings this way, I would have learned!:giggle: I just get in a hurry and the next thing I know, I've dropped an earring in the sink and am standing there watching it go down the drain, and thinking.....not again, you dummy!

This is a 1 minute video explaining how to save money picking something down the drain without taking the sink apart.

Using a sink stopper next time would be a great idea.

A plastic orange ball was put inside the drain as a demonstration for this video.

The gentleman in the video explains that first to use an old cloth [he used an old white tshirt] and put it over a wet vac machine.

The wet vac was turned on and the tshirt covered hose was put over the sink hole and then when the plastic ball was sucked up, the tshirt caught the ball.

The gentleman brought the hose attachment up and you could see the orange ball with other dirt as well.

This shows how you can find your jewelery without taking the sink apart.

That's one of the most creative solutions I've ever read as to how one can retrieve a dropped object in the drain. :)
 
would a standard vacuum attachment wand work? Also, what about drain whose plugs aren't completely removable??

Shop Vac costs like $100 so that would be an epic fail just to fix this small problem with a $5 wrench. I was actually thinking of using a regular vacuum attachment for this same method but the attachment nozzle may be too small so just use the toilet paper tube for that and tape it around.
