SPCA Pet of the Week: World traveling Jasmine needs a special home - San Jose Mercury News

Jasmine, an 8-week-old Jack Russell terrier mix, is a world traveler who came to the Santa Cruz SPCA from Belize, according to SPCA Executive Director Lisa Carter.

Jasmine was part of a stray litter taken in by a kind-hearted person who routinely rescues animals in Central America, Carter said. Jasmine is deaf and was headed toward euthanasia before the SPCA agreed to help her, Carter said.

"We know that our wonderful community is full of animal lovers who aren't afraid to take on a dog with special needs," Carter said.

Jasmine has settled into the SPCA shelter nicely and is a silly and playful puppy, according to Carter.

The SPCA is looking for a special home with people who will give a little extra effort for this sweet girl. Deaf dogs compensate for their hearing loss by developing a stronger reliance on their other senses like sight and smell, Carter said. Therefore, they can be taught to respond to sign language as an effective training tool, she said.

The SPCA would not recommend Jasmine go to a home with children because deaf dogs can be easily startled.

The Santa Cruz SPCA's adoption package for dogs and cats includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro-chipping, an ID tag, collar, a free health exam with a licensed veterinarian, one month's free health insurance, discounted crate purchase and other animal care materials.

For information call the Santa Cruz SPCA at 465-5000, or visit Santa Cruz SPCA - Pet adoption, humane education, and pet owner resources.

The SPCA is at 2685 Chanticleer Ave. in Santa Cruz and is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The Santa Cruz SPCA is a nonprofit and receives no government funding, relying solely on public donations.
