Cathy Allison is a special education teacher for the Broome-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services, where she works with blind and deaf students. She's also adopted animals from the Chemung County Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

So when workers at the shelter in Big Flats found a blind and deaf cat abandoned in their parking lot, they turned to Cathy to take her in. Now, Cathy is hoping whoever left the 1-year-old cat at the shelter will contact her so she can get the cat the help she needs.

"We're willing to pay thousands to help her," said Cathy, who lives atop a hill off Sagetown Road near Lindley.

Cathy calls the cat Sugar. At first glance, Sugar looks like an ordinary cat. Watch for a few minutes, though, and you see something is wrong. Because she can't see, Sugar walks gingerly, reaching forward with her front paws to make sure the path is safe. She likes to follow along a wall, brushing against it with her whiskers so she knows where she is. She makes no reaction to sounds. Cathy can clap her hands sharply right above Sugar's head, and the cat won't so much as twitch.

Otherwise, she seems to be in pretty good condition. She's obviously been well cared for, and must have been an indoor cat, because somewhere along the way she was declawed.

Cathy is not seeking to get anyone in trouble for dropping the cat off. She just wants some information about the cat's health to pass along to the veterinarians. For example, she needs to know whether the blindness and deafness were present since birth, or if they developed more recently. Some conditions that cause those problems could be reversed if treated properly, Cathy said.

If you're the person who left the cat at the shelter and would like to share some information, send me an e-mail or give me a call, and I'll pass anything you share along to Cathy.
