I never watch any of those Alaska reality shows. There is lots of real Alaska is in the news in our newspapers both online and paper and on radio as well. We have a lot of wolves up here. I am always interested in Alaska's wildlife. I love this place. All of these animals are incredible.

Each place has its own feel that's a fact. I love Yukon Territory it is amazing how it is all similar land but northern BC is unique from Yukon and I can feel the difference coming back into Alaska. I guess it is because its home but it seems like my heart beats a little faster around here.

I would like to float the Yukon out to the Bering Sea someday. There is a kazillion things I still want to do around here.

Sounds like you are going to be a driving travelling machine here soon hoichi. It will be a long haul back from Nova Scotia to Alaska.

Some of the coyotes out here are part wolf hybrid . One of them came right to my dog Marty and me when I was outside in my back yard.
I looked down and there was the coyote sniffing my dog butt! Marty was terrified and not moving , I let a yell out and the coyote ran off and Marty started to bark at it. It was a good size coyote and I have no idea how long it was sniffing my dog's butt. And today I found a very small piece of fur on my deck and it was not from my dog. I hope the hell it was not from a coyote.
 
I have not experienced this myself but have heard that coyotes can be very tricky about luring a family dog away. They are up here in the Interior of the state with a spreading population. I did hear recently of coyote hybrids. I know you are protective of Marty and will no doubt be keeping and extra eye out and being out there with him for his times out. That was kind of weird experience wasn't it?

It was more than weird , it was very frighten to think what would had happen if I had not looked down when I did ,as I did not hear and Marty did not bark or growl while the coyote was right on him. I heard of coyotes luring dogs to 'play' with them and end up being a 'meal' . :( I was told by a wildlife expert that someone may be feeding the coyote and that it's losing it natural fear of people. That is the worst thing a person can to do a wild animal feed it food . That is a death sentence for sure to the animal. I was told if there was anymore reports of a coyote coming right to people it would have to killed.

That's scary for Siberian Huskies. They can often be mistaken for their wolf descendants. I would hate to see stray Huskies being shot for being friendly to people.

That's really pissed me off. Siberian huskies are so friendly and hard to believe about attack to human. We own two Siberian huskies for six years and they still friendly to humans and dogs. Wolfs are more bigger, long nose, and not smooth hair.

I don't think Siberian Huskies look like coyotes , Siberian Huskies are mostly heavier than coyotes and I think Siberian Huskies markings on their faces is difference looking. I got a every good look at that coyote , it was standing right near me. I could had touch it. It was too close for comfort .
 
The animal shelter that I volunteered at many years ago had a Siberian Huskie. I saw file on the dog. I noticed that they had contacted a wolf group in the area to ask if the dog was a full Husky or a wolf mix. They told the shelter that it was a full bred Husky. I can see how some people who aren't experienced with dogs and wolves would mistake those 2. For those that knows the difference, good for them.

Actually look up agouti huskies coloring those can be mistaken for wolves


For the article. Brutal world. Always known that about wolves but not the fact that domiant ones are more likely to be killed than the pussies.

I have not seen husky this color , according to the web site it's rare. I will have agree some do look like wolves . My concern was if the coyote needed to shot that the wrong one would be killed. So I am glad it had not come up to my dog and me again, I did frighten it when I yelled at it. I did not yell too loud as it was 12 AM . I do not take my dog out that late anymore.
 
Just use the gun or rifle just in case if the wolf or dog have rabies. There is no way to fight the animals who have rabies. I agree with the woman about the old wolf who was very hungry and helpless with no pack wolves. No body like to see the wolves die because of the hardship in the woods. If this has not been that many people living in their habitats, they would manage to live peacefully and have food in their stomachs. I love wolves as they are our brothers or sisters in spirit. Animals is part of our Native culture to our tribe clans. :(

Yes, I don't want guns where there is people killing each other. But I do know about rabies and it is really nasty sickness. When you see animals with rabies, the animals have white foams out of their mouth and their body is not healthy either. They are very sick. They are sensitive to lights and noises. they have a mean streak of violence toward anything that move in front of them. It is good to know the old wolf does not have rabies, just being hungry. But just in case, it is better to carry firearms for protection. What about bears out in the wilderness? We had black bears on our island in Ontario, Canada. Just have to be careful when you walk along side of the dirt or country roads.

EDIT: Yes, I want to ban all guns. True. :(
 
Before the gun came to this country it was packed with animals. Migrations of birds that darkened the sunny skies, migratory animals in the millions. You read old accounts of game hunting by white hunters and it quickly gets into shocking numbers of animals.

Killing of the wild animals is a big industry up here. It covers the full gamut of the activity. Some is about feeding families. Most is about money.

I personally see the gun as a tool for food and protection. I look at what humanity has done with the gun and it is a bloody frenzy of savagery that is disgusting beyond description.

Still that being said I would have blasted that hungry wolf into the next life before letting it kill and eat my old dog. The lady in the story was not wrong though in not being armed. Most of us carry in the spring, summer and fall months for protection. It is a wake up call really. These animals can have rabies or starvation in winter and some kind gun protection is the best to have along. Even the bears come out of hibernation in winter for various reasons.
