Wirral club for deaf children wins community gold award (From Wirral Globe)
Wirral Dolphin Swim and Sign Club has been named Community Project of the Year by the sport’s national governing body.
The club has taken gold in the Community Project category at the Kellogg’s ASA Swimtastic Awards after being recognised for their work within the community.
Representatives from the club will collect the award at a special awards ceremony in Stratford-upon-Avon on Friday, when they will meet more than two-dozen aquatic stars.
The Dolphin Swim and Sign Club was established a year ago after Sue Walker attended a meeting of the Wirral Deaf Children’s Society and learned there was a lack of opportunities for deaf children to learn to swim.
She nominated her swimmers for the award in recognition of their progress in both swimming and their self-confidence.
She said: “I learned that parents were feeling frustrated and angry after they were told that their child could not attend mainstream lessons because of health and safety risks.
“When I got home I was too frustrated about this situation and decided to go ahead and try to sort out swimming for our deaf and hearing impaired children in the Wirral.”
Katie Brazier, ASA sponsorship director, said: "The awards are a great opportunity for us to celebrate the amazing achievements of people across all levels and areas of our sport.
"The winners, who are of all ages and abilities, are just the tip of iceberg in terms of the amount of unsung swimming stars out there and it's great to be able to honour the Dolphin Swim and Sign Club with this award."
