TorontoSun.com - Canada - Why was deaf, kind, 'harmless' man killed?
Two teenagers are charged with the sadistic murder of a kind-hearted Brampton man who had invited them over for a party at his apartment.
"One of these individuals took great pleasure in inflicting injury to the deceased," Peel police Homicide Insp. Norm English said.
"It was a brutal and senseless act against a helpless individual who offered no resistance."
Brian Wainman, 27, was badly beaten and repeatedly stabbed sometime late Friday or early Saturday morning at his apartment on Church St. E. near Kennedy Rd. in Brampton.
His body was not discovered until 8 p.m. Saturday, when friends who'd been trying to reach him finally climbed onto his balcony to see why he hadn't answered their calls.
Several people had gathered at the apartment starting around 6 p.m. Friday to drink beer -- something the victim frequently invited friends over to do.
Everyone left later on, except for Wainman and the two accused, English said.
"What happened we certainly know, but why we can't yet say," he said.
"There are still a few people who attended the party we would like to speak to."
Wainman was deaf from birth but could communicate. He had worked as a general labourer but wasn't working at the time of his death and lived off a disability pension, friends said.
Neighbours said Wainman was a nice man who often would invite crack addicts and prostitutes hanging out at a nearby strip mall back to his place for parties.
"It seems people would take advantage of him," English said. "It's very unfortunate."
The man who found Wainman's body said the victim wasn't answering his door so he climbed up onto his balcony to look in.
"I could see Brian lying on the floor so I went in and shook him," the man, who didn't want his name used, said. "He was obviously dead so I ran out and called 911."
There was little sign of a disturbance in the apartment and just a small amount of blood on Wainman's face, he said.
Friend Rhonda Snider, 19, said the last time she saw Wainman was about a week ago, just as she left for a visit to London, Ont.
She came back yesterday and buzzed his apartment, only to find herself talking to a police officer.
"He would always help out people when he could," Snider, who'd known Wainman for seven years, said. "He would let me crash on his couch for a few hours."
She said she had spoken to friends who had been drinking with Wainman and the two suspects before the murder and they said they thought the violence broke out after he asked them to leave.
"Brian wouldn't let them stay overnight," she said.
Her friend, James Martineau, said Wainman was a victim of his own generosity.
"He was a harmless guy," Martineau, 27, said.
The two accused, both 18, were arrested separately at their homes in Brampton.
Anthony Daniels Medwid and Donald Corey Martin are both charged with second-degree murder. Medwid was only recently arrested after a pizza delivery man was threatened with a knife Jan. 13.
