Why Honey is Not Vegan

I considered going vegan but it's too restrictive for me. I can't give up dairy products and eggs. I'm happy with meat substitutes, though.

technically, eggs, honey, silk, leather, white table sugar NOT vegan; white table sugar due to way much of it is processed as opposed to the actual item <sugar>. But within vegan circles there is varying acceptance of use both honey and white sugar. At vegan Thanksgiving potluck I often go, officially vegan guidelines are pretty strict about what can be brought and set to eat at community potluck table. However, if someone forgets or doesn't know about the sugar and the honey, and just leaves it at their table as a TABLE-WIDE-only item if people desire, that is okay, so long as either there is an ingredient list there or the bringer explains that item does contain honey or sugar. I avoid refined white sugar myself for health reasons anyway, but do occasionally have some local, raw, chemical-free honey from small local keeper. I was at one strictly vegan. I think practice is fine but with some flexibility and empathy built into it so one does not become judgemental and rigid. I also think that being vegan is a cultural/class choice many people in the U.S. happen to have but people should be aware that choice is not available to all in U.S. and other cultures using traditional foods that are animal-based like blood, or seal meat or whatever, should not be penalized or judged.

I don't do dairy either and buy local eggs from pastured chickens
and no,as far as I know, most PETA subscribers don't eat honey.
I like SOME things about PETA but find they can also be mis-informed and dogmatic.

Quite interesting posts, DogMom. One day, I hope I can become vegetarian again. ::fingersx:

We were vegetarians for three years. Not vegan. I don't think I will ever go back to it.

Is the difference between being vegetarian and vegan one of some compromises?

Vegan consume no animal products.

Vegetarians consume eggs and milk usually _ lacto/ovo

Milk only= Lacto vegetarian

Fish-= Pesco vegetarian

All those= Lacto/ovo/pesco

Sorry for not made clear post. I want to be vegetarian again so I can become vegan in next step. ^^;

Tousi, that could be a way to look at it. I think it may depend on who you ask. Vegetarianism relates specifically to food and drink ingested, while some claim "vegan" as more overall lifestyle, which includes avoidance of leather, silk, wool in clothing and shoes and home products, as well as forgoing like things like gelatin, and other edible already mentioned items. Strict vegans who use vitamins buy vegan ones, for example, don't feed their dogs and cats <carnivorous pets> items with any animal products and look for vegan personal care products - example like, vegan lip gloss, shampoo, deodorant and shaving cream/soap, etc.

then there's raw vegan. I've eaten that and it's good but it's very labor-intensive to do that full-time. Some at Vegan Thanksgiving potluck I mentioned before bring raw vegan foods to share, which is labeled as such. Raw refers to food not being cooked over certain degree temperature, so is also often gluten free, much emphasis on nuts and seeds for "crusts" and coatings. Tend to requires dehydrator, food processor and raw vegan cookbooks, mentors to make long-term commitment to it.
