Who’s Smarter? Mac Users Or Windows Users?

By Jeffrey Mincey - Friday, October 13, 2006

DummiesDon’t you just want to pull out your hair when you explain the benefits of Mac to Windows users. What happens?

They shrug, roll their eyes, and say, ”I don’t get it.” There’s a reason why and it’s not pretty.

In the simplest of terms, many computer users ”don’t get it” and never will. They don’t want to.

We call them Windows users. Ouch. That’s a poke, but you’ll understand in a moment.

Most of us in the tech and support field know that the weakest link in computing use is the user.

So it is with security issues, too. Educating users is pointless, so says Stefan Gorling who researches such things.

CNET is running an insightful article that basically says, ”User Education Is Pointless.” I have to agree.

While some computer users learn to improve their habits and productivity, most are still stuck in the stone age of usability.

As Gorling says, they don’t understand secure passwords, they write them down, give them out to others, and can’t spell ”phishing.”

Here’s the connection. Most computer users are Windows users; to the tune of some 90-percent of PCs around the world.

Applying the traditional Bell Curve to most users results in a few that ”get it”, quite a few that don’t, and some that never will.

Generally speaking, Mac users have made an educated choice not to deal with the frustrations caused by their computers.

We chose Macs. We did so because Macs work better. Arguable, but not very.

While most surveys indicate that Mac users are better off economically, have more spendable income, and are better educated, what of the unwashed masses of Windows users?

Are Mac users simply smarter than Windows users?

Can Windows users be educated to better use their PCs, thereby gaining sufficient knowledge to understand the need to switch to a Mac?

Gorling doesn’t think education will make much difference in some areas, hence the relatively slow adoption of Macs by Windows switchers.

Why are Windows PCs less secure than Macs?

Two reasons. One is the inherent secure design of Mac OS X vs. the poor design of Windows. The second must be because Mac users are smarter than Windows users.

IBM’s Martin Overton says:

“It really is a nightmare. User education is a complete waste of time. It is about as much use as nailing jelly to a wall… There is no good trying to teach them what phishing is, what rootkits are, what malware is, etc. They are not interested; they just want to do their job.”

Many others would insist that education is necessary for computer users, even Mac users-- and necessary to enhance security, and reduce fraud.

I can’t deny the benefits of education for some. For many, it’s a lost cause, an exercise in futility, the never-ending-job, the last crusade, true job security.

Macs will never reach 15-percent market share ever again. Not because the Mac doesn’t perform better vs. Windows PCs. It does.

The problem is the user. Most of the world of Windows users, those necessary for Mac’s market share to increase, don’t care enough to make the switch because they’re just not…

I could say they’re just not well educated enough. I won’t.

Why not? Because, as the man says, education doesn’t matter, for security or market share. Mac users? We’re just smarter.

I guess I must be smart as I'm a Mac user. Of course, I'm a slightly biased Mac user. ;)

Windows get more viruses because it has a larger share of the market....
If you were to design a virus, who would you infect? Windows...or Macs?

Viruses are meant to target as many people as possible--which is one of the reasons why Windows are so virus-prone--Windows has a large market.

And have you seen the price tags for Macs? They're expensive! Of course the Mac users will be better off if they can get a Mac and still pay the bills!

OSs have nothing to do with intelligence....:)

i m an windows user i like windows because its much more customizeble than mac operation system but then thats my opinion they re easier for me when i upgrade my computer so far its doing pretty good man i love customizing my computer there s no end to those upgrades new series of hardware parts keep coming out of course some are crap some re good oh well however i am an window user and proud of it

Myself im a windows user.. but again i heard Mac version is MUCH better than windows cuz it not cauing any little problem or any strange problem pop ups, But Im not mac fan tho.. i just still prefer windows with my own reasons.

All you know Bill Gates create any of kind of windows.. that's why he try to sell to everybody to buy his stuff.

It's true that older Macs are hard to upgrade.

Well I intend to upgrade my G4 MMD Mac's RAM, CPU, Vid card, CPU and my HD and I know enough about hardware to find the right hardware in a computer store and I'm talking about stores that don't sell Macs. Although my Mac isn't as easy to upgrade as PCs, it can be upgraded. G5 are said to be very upgradeable and easy to customize.

Here are some Mac upgrades links:

Are you familiar with BSD stye UNIX systems? They're designed to be secure. The OS X system is based on FreeBSD. The Darwin kernel is based upon the Mach Kernel. Even if the OS X were to become popular, it will be much less affected by viruses than Windows. However, it's not 100% immune to viruses.

If you can't afford to get Mac then apply for credit card then you can pay every monthly until pay off.

I'm currently Windows user for around 8 years and dislike Windows for long time, and would switch into Mac user soon, around next year after get new iMac.

I used to be Windows User since it's pretty suck and gets crash very easily until I moved in with Sequoias sicne he is Mac User, it's WONDERFUL but sort of weird since I am still awkard with it because I don't know Mac that well like I knew Windows and windows is more easier to find and such like that... ;) Mac is better for me :thumb:

I think it is depend on individuals who is smarter that Mac user or windows user ?
I've never used macs . So :dunno:

I've used Windows but I'm partial to Macs. If you're into gaming, I'd suggest Windows instead of Macs.

Sorry I have to make another choice out of the 2 candidates - linux/Unix users. They must remember tons of short command phases before freely using of it.

I know that Mac have alot of good games but need get iMac, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro to support higher video and graphic then would fine to play games, some hardcore gamers are playing on Mac.
