..invited at a party in someone's house,

please please, if you are not being asked for help by a host,
don't help by force :(

It's annoying, isn't it?

I barely saved my gold edged plates from being ruined in the dishwasher.
If I didn't noticed that in time..... :eek3:

I don't mean to be ungrateful

but geez - only the host knows how to handle her own stuff properly,
that's why the truly polite nice guest - ASK first.

I was taught to always pitch in and help even before someone asks. To me, that is the polite thing to do. However, if the host specifically says, "Oh please just sit and relax, I will do this", that is certainly what I will do :).
 
I always ask first. "Do you need any help with this?" They'd gratefully take your offer.

See, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but - see what can happen?

I have these second store plates that are dear to me, not worth much
but I took time and pains to hand pick these,
and since they are not new,
putting them thru a dishwasher would ruin them for sure :(

I certainly can understand your POV - it can be viewed as being very polite to pitch in without being asked,
but don't you think if the host says "oh, please sit and..." it could be a clue
that, after all, it IS better to ask first?

It, however, is very nice of you to sit down and relax as I had guests who insisted to help despite me telling them to please sit down! :shock:
My problem - I can't talk and cut stuff at the same time, grrr
and some pple don't get this.

they ask me hundred question, and in the end it takes me twice as long to do a simple task.

So, please, my guests, ~ SIT DOWN and RELAX, thanks! :giggle:

That almost happen to my mom too! A guest put mom whole set of gold edged plates in the dish washer! My mother stopped the person just before they turned on the dish washer! My mom loved those plates !

Yes fuzzy, I can see why it ticks you off. And, if you do all the cooking and cleaning I would be more than happy to come to your place for dinner and just sit on my butt the whole time. haha

Believe me, I wouldn't have a problem with that :lol:

I like my guests to actually just SIT on their butt,
because my philosophy is - you have to do chores at your own house all the time,
so be truly a GUEST at mine :)

So, Journey, you are terrific and sweet person if you still want to help at others houses,
but why not forget it at least once in a while and really just sit down and relax for a change, eh?

well, I do have some very close friends whom I feel comfortable asking for help sometimes -
the key word here ASKING :)

Oh, I can totally relate! When the in-laws stay with us, I have to repeatedly beg my husband to keep his mother out of my kitchen!

She begs and begs to help in cooking dinner (my only quiet escape from entertaining), and when I assure her I don't need help and ask her to relax in the other room, she won't! Instead, she hovers over me and asks five million questions while I'm trying to cook - I can't lipread and cook at the same time. Gawd is she dense!

So my in-laws must think I suck at cooking, because my dinners always end up burnt!
