Other than bang your head against the wall, that is.

Everything I can find says to use Recovery Mode back to factory settings. I was hoping someone might have a better idea.

This is what happened:

TCS hadn't used his iPad (1) in a while. Last night, when he powered up, he got a screen that required him to enter a 4-digit passcode. Since he never set a passcode for his iPad, he couldn't enter one. So, now he can't use his iPad.

When I searched on-line support for solutions, they all suggested that the iPad needed to be set back to factory settings.

All the times in the past when he used the iPad it didn't require a passcode. Now it does. :(

He didn't forget his passcode--he never had one.

Reb I was going to ask you this question I not got passcode for my iPad last night I had something come up asking for my apple pass codes.could it be something went wrong with Apple yesterday

I suspect it came with one of the automatic updates. I can't confirm that yet but it seems possible.

I had update yesterday.not been same since I unable to get into all the apple things iTunes etc unless put this code in unable to let Apple know ask for passcode as not allow me in.i also not used me iPad for sometime.going try Apple forums tomorrow see others got same problems

I asked my SIL to read this thread and here's what he had to say. Remember he works for Apple and lives and breathes Apple - almost literally as the new campus is being built directly across from their new apartment (in the same complex they've lived in over the past year).

updates aren’t automatic, you can decline them. looks like they didn’t see the passcode options field to choose not to add one. they can go to settings—>passcode and disable it (once they know the passcode that is)

When I mentioned that TCS did not set a passcode, this was his response.
literally not possible someone set one

TCS hasn't even touched his iPad in weeks. This screen requesting a 4-digit passcode never before showed up. He was really surprised because his iPad never before required a passcode.

I also checked the Apple Forum, and other people have the same problem.

TCS doesn't keep any files on his tablet, and does no financial transactions on it, so he doesn't lock the iPad with a passcode or password. He turns it on and off--no logging in.

I try that tomorrow love blue thanks for info
