: Now, what about … you talk in the book about geothermal energy …

Al: Yeah, yeah.

Conan: and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that’s generated from the core of the earth …

Al: Yeah.

Conan: … to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

Al: It definitely is, and it’s a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy — when they think about it at all — in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, ’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …

Laughably funny when Gore doesn't even know what he's talking about. Several million degrees? We'd be a star at that temperature. It's more like from 4000 up to 9000 degrees Celsius depending on who you ask. The sun's surface is at around 6000 degrees while in the center of the sun the fusion process generates around 10 million degrees.

And Al Gore is the spokesman for runaway global warming? Say, aren't we preparing for the coldest winter in a decade or so?

It is just his opinion, opinion is never correct or wrong.

Rest of your post are opinion.

several million degrees! it's true!

*it's a pix of fire coming out of Al Gore's mouth, blowing fire at Earth like a fire-breathing dragon.

Here's what one poster (see post id Post ID 826,867) has to say about Gore's gaffe:

Well, it perhaps shows poor research for the bit (i.e. he just decided to put it in there on the spur of the moment) or maybe just a slip of the tongue. It's highly likely he meant several thousand degrees and just got it wrong when it came to saying it on live TV. Even if he actually thought that was the case before, no doubt someone has corrected him.

There is a big difference between this and, for example, a scientist going around saying that we can't reduce carbon emissions 'because most of them come from volcanoes', as Ian Plimer said on radio 4 the other day. He's a geologist, so is either lying or woefully ignorant of his own field.

As an aside, why do "sceptics" like to focus on what Gore says/does so much, particularly in America? There almost seems to be the opinion that if Gore gets something wrong, the whole edifice of AGW comes crumbling down.

As other posters have pointed out on that forum, Gore is a politican - not a scientist.

I believe the scientists NOT funded by corporate interests.

It is just his opinion, opinion is never correct or wrong.

It's a fact that the center of the Earth's temperature is NOT several million degrees but several thousand degrees Celsius instead. That's a one thousand magnitude less in scale. This isn't an opinion but an actual scientific fact about the Earth's core temperature.

this is the late night Conan's show... everything said there is sometimes exaggerated and no one treats that as fact... its all laid back dialogue...

though, it's certainly thousands degrees, not millions...

No, that's opinion.

No, that's opinion.

Heath Earth Science. Heath, 1994: 22. "The inner core is probably no hotter than 7000 degrees Celsius."

The Worldbook Encyclopedia. Chicago: Worldbook, 1999: 20-21. "The temperature at the core maybe as high as 7000 degrees Celsius."

De Bremaecker, Jean-Claude. "Temperature in the core." Geophysics of the Earth's Interior. Canada, 1985: 296-297. "The temperature at the inner core boundary is probably between 3400 and 5700 degrees Celsius."

Beiser, Arthur. The Earth. US: Time Life, 1969: 36. "It's temperature is somewhere between 2000 and 4500 degrees Celsius."

Kubala, Bizy & Mahan Rao. Earth's Core Temperature. Byrdand Black, 1996. "Earth's core temperature is estimated at around 5000 to 7000 degrees Celsius."

No one can really explore the earths interior. Scientist obtain information about the characteristics of the earth's interior by studying earthquake records. Earthquake waves help scientists figure out the distances to each of the section of the earth's interior. The Earth can be divided into three large sections: the mantle, inner core, and outer core. The inner core is at the center of the earth. The pressure and temperature of the earth increases as one moves closer to the center. First comes the mantle, this is a layer that is bellow the crust of the earth. This is said to go down 2,900 kilometers; it's temperature is about 870 degrees Celsius. The outer core has a very high temperature and ranges from about 4,400 degrees Celsius to about 6,100 degrees Celsius. The outer core beginnings where the mantle stops and it extends further down to the center 2,250 kilometers. The inner core is about 6,400 kilometers below the earths surface. the temperature at the inner core of the earth is at the high is about 7,000 degrees Celsius. But compared with the sun the earth's temperature at the center of the earth is only about the outer reign of the sun.

Temperature at the Center of the Earth

Not an opinion. A fact. It is in the realm of several thousands degrees Celsius. NOT several million degrees Celsius. If it were several million degrees Earth be a star instead, not a planet.

No, it is still opinion.

It's based on geophysics and how thermodynamics work at the Earth's core. It's the understanding how thermal gradient works at the crustal region down to the mantle and core. It is physically impossible and certanly breaks the law of thermodynamics, not mentioning the laws of physics on how materials behave under heat and pressure, the Earth core cannot be in the several million degrees celsius. The Earth planet is simply too small too even generate that much heat. If os, then that's a recipe for Earth to become a star.

For once in your life please go and learn about Earth science.

so you are too.

I found out from friend about Al Gore is just misspoke so what is big deal? nothing.

Why are we debating over what a politician said who is well-known to hijack the environmentalism platform to serve his own purpose?

Both of you need a time-out.

Don't know why.

Humans does make mistake like Al Gore did misspoke about temperature degree in earth so I don't think it is big deal.

I'm concentrating on the facts of science regarding Earth core temperature. Not only does Al hijacks the environmentalism platform, he doesn't even know what he's talking about numerous times over the years. I'm sure he must've "misspoke" on his "science" explanations numerous times yet he cannot get the simple facts correct. It is laughable than anyone would actually believe that an Earth core temperature would be in the several millions of degrees Celsius comparable to the temperature of our nearest star's outer surface. That is, the Sun is our star.

Paris Hilton: That's hot!
