What is it like to be deaf and go to the movies? Is it less enjoyable because there is no sound? Do you like the choices they make such as when to play the movies and what movies to caption?

because i'm totally deafblind, i never enjoyed going to the movies after i lost my hearing. i would oftentimes bring a friend who could repeat the dialogue to me, but it was too difficult to hear. i've also tried using fm systems that some theaters are equipped with, but they never seemed to provide enough amplification. now i have bilateral ci's and rent movies at home so i can watch them at my own convenience.

To answer your question -

It doesn't make any difference just because there's no sounds. Often time, they have movies that are open-captioned. Some of the time the choices are limited as to what movies are open-captioned but yes, most of the time I like the choices for these movies that are open-captioned.

If there isn't any open-captioned movies that I want to watch, There's always the DVD. Nothing beats anything better than watching it at home and being curled up under the blanket on the couch eating a bowl of popcorn or ice cream. :)

Good question, w112dat.

I have yet to go to a movie with any of my deaf friends...I guess i never bothered asking if they frequent theatres that have adapted the technology for them.:dunno:
