Off-duty deputy shoots man in groin to foil attempted heist
An 18-year-old man was shot by an off-duty Bexar County Sheriff's deputy working security Thursday evening during an attempted holdup at a South Side pawnshop.
Authorities said the young man walked into the pawnshop in the 1800 block of Southwest Military Drive, pulled a semiautomatic handgun, and demanded cash from the employees.
The deputy confronted the man inside the store and fired his service weapon, hitting him once in the upper groin area, said Sheriff's Lt. Tom Roach.
The man was taken to University Hospital for treatment and was set to be booked into Bexar County jail on two felony charges: aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
Roach said it was not clear if the man pointed his weapon at the deputy before the officer fired.
The deputy was unhurt, Roach said.
