What it is like to shop in 1980s

For some of us, the 1980's weren't the "good ol' days." :lol:

Now, if you show the 50's and 60's, that would be different. :D
 
Hi Derek, I sure remember that, I had the jeans jacket, leg warmers, big shirts/jackets with tights or tight jeans with socks up over the cuffs, high top shoes, tie dye and stuff...the "big hair" like a lot of women in those photos - yeah, that was sure popular my high school. One of my favorite things to wear was some tie dye variously-colored blue leggings with a extra large pink or purple sweatshirt - and I'm premature so I'm small. I had shoes with multi-colored laces. I also loved my ripped jeans and t-shirts, still have ripped jeans <dogs -grin> and plenty of t-shirts- really all I wear usually.

In high school, lots of mohawks and Goth too and super-long and multiple earrings and piercings - male or female.
Flashdance was one of my favorite movies and those mall scenes really look a lot like the malls I hung out in, including the carpeting, fountains, steps and tile...one of the malls closest to us that I used to walk to alot, had a round, reddish circle patterns in their tile floor.

and I remember friendship pins.

and I remember going on planes and the "smoking" and non-smoking" sections - my mom who smoked til I was in about 8th grade - she'd sit in the back and I always sat as far from the smoking section as I could.


I still like and have tie dye shirts and socks:)

We had tie-dyed shirts in the 60's-70's but they were actually tie-dyed by hand.

We also had mood rings before the 80's.

Some things of the 80's weren't really new with the 80's. :lol:
 
yes, I've heard about the tie-dyed differences - hand-doing them I think makes them look nicer many times. I volunteered at a camp for kids with spina bifida and other various physical/mobility needs in the late 90's we made some camp tie-dye shirts one day.

I remember mood rings but didn't have one. But I do remember passing notes! and making those little designs out of folded paper and there would be notes written in it. I couldn't figure how to make them but I did pass or get them.:lol:

One time though I was in about 8th grade and we had alphabetical seating, so I was forced to sit next to and between some of the popular kids who were passing notes back and forth and also directly in front of one of the larger girls who was especially physically bullying. I didn't want to pass the notes but I was scared to not do it, so I did. I think at one point though I got up to try and sneaky-move to a different spot, when the teacher wasn't looking,and the bigger girl who was the worst bully tripped me and I went down. I had my books and stuff. Whew was I embarrassed!

I also remember the Miami Vice look. I watched that show a lot.
 
1980's... pay phones everywhere.... today, almost everyone has cell phones so the pay phones are scarce now. Bulky computers and TV's.... now it's thinner and lighter.

Just one of many big changes in the 30 years.

Do you remember the poodle skirts from the 50's? I can remember having a two parties line for our phone . My dad got just us kids because he was not to call home , we had the line tied up . We would have to wait for the other house to finish using the phone . It was weird sharing a phone line with another family .

Yes, I remember poodle skirts. Yes, we had a two-party phone line (hated it).
 
There is a new show on Tuesday nights called "The Goldberg's" based in 1980. Hubby and I get quite a few laughs going down memory lane. They had this whole thing about programming the VCR last night. The kids were telling the dad that he could just speak into the remote to record the Phillies game. WOW how far we have come with electronics.

computers were made to plug in TVs, and used cassette tapes for loading and saving lol
loved it though...it was a 'wizard's toy' lol

Today, you look at children and adults and they are all staring at phones and ipads as they walk, sit, eat, etc. People do not even talk to each other. The 1980s look pretty damn good with the exception of the feathered hair and mullets. The people were less obese because the food was less fake, less GMO and less corn syrup as well.

The work place started changing radically in those years. Stability went out and bad management came rolling in. We went from being hard working and stable and down the new trail that exists to this day. In many ways it is good less bigotry etc. but other than that it sucks now.
I was not crazy about the music or the cars of the time. Then I liked 50's and 60's vehicles- still do. :lol: I do have a fun underpowered 1983 4x4 chevy I am enjoying though

My granddaughter saw a vinyl record last week and wanted to know what it was . My daughter uses to play them too not that long ago so it was funny when her daughter asked what it was. We sure had come a long way. I thought the eight tracks tapes where really cool when they came out.

Oh wow, smoking in the mall. :lol:

I'm glad that I wasn't student at UAB in 1980's - quarter system (fall quarter, winter quarter, spring quarter), smoking in the class, limited options for food places, no computer, no WiFi, eyesore painting colors, ugly gray/brown carpet, high crime due to crack epidemic, fire alarm were common, community bathroom/public shower. :ugh:
