WEST HAVERSTRAW — An argument over money may have led a man to repeatedly hit another man on the head with a baseball bat, Haverstraw police said yesterday.

Detectives were continuing to investigate the cause of Friday night's attack at Walnut Hill apartments.

The victim, 39, who has a prosthetic right arm, was in stable but critical condition yesterday afternoon at Westchester Medical Center, police said.

Robert Russell, 45, was held in the Rockland County jail without bail yesterday on a charge of second-degree attempted murder.

Detective Sgt. John Hickey said investigators were still trying to interview the victim and other witnesses about the argument and attack.

"We expect the victim will provide us with more information, when we can speak with him," Hickey said. "We interviewed Russell and the witness. We think it's some argument over money."

Police used a certified sign language interpreter to speak with Russell, who is deaf and mute, and his girlfriend, a witness to the incident.

The woman, who also is deaf and mute, didn't know much about the argument because neither Russell nor the victim were communicating in sign language during their fight, police said.

"All she knew is they were making mean faces and arguing," Hickey said.

What police do know is that the victim went to Russell's apartment at the Route 9W housing complex before 9 p.m. Friday.

After Russell invited the victim inside, they got into an argument in the hallway, Hickey said.

"They became involved in an altercation, making gestures back and forth," Hickey said. "The defendant broke free of the victim and ran and came back with a baseball bat. He struck the guy several times in the head."

Haverstraw Ambulance Corps volunteers took the victim to a waiting medical STAT Flight helicopter at the West Haverstraw Elementary School.
