Weekend storm has created a giant sink hole in Guatemala.

It does look like a drilled well.

I'd hate to see the drill bit that was used.

Sounds like a job for Fox Mulder ;)

(btw - I don't think this happened over the weekend, I think it happened in 2007).

There's two holes, steiner. They look similar but the one from recently is recent. Look at the pictures very carefully, you will notice the one from 2007 is from a different building complex.

Pay attention! :sadwave:

Um.... potholes can be perfectly rounded. Sinkholes are just bigger potholes. :)

oh this is not unusual - the "perfect" circle. Had a good lecture about it in my geo class.

Sinkhole usually happens when:
1. the aquifer is over-pumped and/or depleted to the point where the structural integrity got weak and it collapsed (it's like a giant empty cave underground with bunch of buildings on top) - see link for pix
2. a massive massive sewer system collapsed (see link for pix)
3. unstable underground foundation (if made of limestone) because heavy raining may cause it to weaken

how does it create a perfect circle? just think of it as sand falling thru hourglass. it's that simple.

Thanks for the huge relief you bring, Jiro. I was thinking of a huge antlion but that's a bit much, isn't it?

oops! I forgot!

4. an extremely rare occurrence - a giant antlion does emerge once in a while.

OH SHIT!!!!!

 BTW I think must of us are kidding about cause.......but this one does look "more perfect" than most

this is partial collapse.

all above that look like a "perfect" circle. it's simply the result of cascade effect of ground depression like hourglass. it's truly a marvel of nature. I wish to see it in person!!!

We have had several in Texas.....usually in rural areas. But they never look tooled like this one

Sinkholes are common in karst formations or subsurface limestone formations. Guatamala is known for that and have some the world's best know deep caves. Karst formation is very common in the U.S. Usually it's when in a drought situation causing the water table to drop do sinkholes form. And how it forms it is common to see it in a circular form. Here's a quick coverage on karst formations and how sinkholes are formed, you'll understand why they're mostly circular in formation.

I checked about sinkholes and remember about that from 8th grade. The sinkhole in Guatemala is damn huge and deeper.

I remember about there was sinkhole in Hollywood during subway construction in mid 1990's.

But as a reminder, it's not always a karst system that can form sink holes. You can have volcanic deposits or even salt dome geologic formation that could be vulnerable in becoming a sink hole. Usually it's the limestone formation where we see many of the sinkholes occur.

wondering if the hole goes thru China :hmm:

Amazing! Looks like if a super hero accidently shot a laser beam or something at the enemy and missed it and left a huge hole in the ground.

If it is so real, what cause perfect shaped cyclinder hole? Storm don't make that perfect hole.

I am not saying it is 100% fake yet, just trying to figure out how it is possible.

At first, I thought it look fake on the first panel during the error on the shadow between the house and hole. However, the second one look correct and real.

That make me think that person who own DSLR may use High dynamic Range set
