We have a possible 'Why'!

For those of you not familiar with me I have had a progressive sensorineural hearing loss my whole life. It has recently progressed to a profound loss in both ears. We have never known the cause but now I have some new information!

I have just found out that my birth father was hoh, one of my birthmothers siblings was deaf, my grandmother on my birthmothers side was deaf, and several of her siblings were either deaf or hoh!

They have never done genetic testing on me, and with the additional loss they were going to start a whole series of tests including audiograms every few weeks, a BAER, genetic testing, MRIs...you name it they talked about doing it! I am not concerned about the cause at this point because no matter what the cause the treatment is the same, a CI or continuing with HA's. I have already chosen to continue with HA's, and was thinking about stopping with the doctors and the testing. Now that I have this information I am definatly not going to put myself through more testing, and doctors appointments.

I am soo excited about this information! This means that my hearing loss is almost definatly genetic! No more tests for me! YAY!

Wow! I am glad you found your birth parents. That solves the mystery for ya!
 
Haven't found my birth parents...just some info :D but hey! for now the info is good enough!
 
Knowing the "why" doesn't change the "what is", but it does provide you with a sort of comfort, and the relief from endless testing! Good for you.
 
I am not worried about the 'what is'...I know I am Deaf. Doesn't bother me, I don't feel like I am something that needs to be fixed. I am trying to hearing aids tomorrow but if they don't work it's not a big deal. It's not like I am not surviving right now without them. I am actually doing just fine.

The reason why this possibly 'why' is exciting is because I am now confident in my choice to cancel the doctors appointments. Going to my audi that I am not going to do anymore testing aside from audiograms as she feels they are necessary. We shall see what she says, I have a page full on defences just incase haha. She is very good though, and I think she will get it.:fingersx:
