We All Enjoyed A Super Day Out (from Swindon Advertiser)

A SUMMER fun day and barbecue in aid of a Swindon charity for the deaf has been hailed an overwhelming success.

The fundraising event, which was held at Supermarine Rugby Club, South Marston, was organised by Deaf Essential Access Forum (DEAF) and featured face painting, a bouncy castle, music and a number of stalls.

Harley Davidson bike rides were also popular with children for £1 a go.

The six-hour event was well supported with 180 adults and 20 children enjoying the fine weather.

More than £1,000 was raised for the charity, which aims to provide Quality of Life programmes for deaf people in the Swindon borough.

Martin Bryan, chairman of Supermarine Rugby Club, said the fundraiser had been planned some months ago.

He said: "DEAF approached us about two to three months ago about wanting to put on a summer fun day and we were only too pleased to help out.

"There were a lot of people there and it's great to think how much money will go to their organisation.

"They are looking to develop their support service for local deaf people so any funds raised are important to them.

"I didn't realise there is precious little support for deaf or hearing impaired people in Swindon.

"Days like Sunday give them a focus for fundraising."

DEAF has met and developed relationships with service providers, such as the Hearing Impairment Team, social services and the health sector with a view of becoming potential partners and benefiting local deaf people.

The charity relies on donations to be able to continue its work with deaf people in Swindon and the surrounding area.

The charity, which is based at Basepoint Business Centre in Rivermead Drive, West Swindon, hopes to organise a Halloween party in October followed by a Christmas ball to continue its fundraising.
