I am in the planning stages right now and trying to crunch some numbers to see if driving/flying to florida from NYS is feasible with my kids. Can anyone recommend ideas if you been there before? Also I am trying to see if I can spend a few days at the beach as none of my kids has touched the ocean before. I dunno if I will do it before or after the walt disney trip. Also does anyone know of a great package that doesnt cost an arm and leg? What should I consider doing?
 
Consider doing the car-train! It's the most economical option, and very easy to do with kids, as you put the car on the train, have dinner on the train, go to sleep, wake up in the morning in Florida! There is one that goes from Lorton (just outside D.C.). If there is one from NYC, I would strongly recommend you look into that. Friends of mine with kids have said it's the most economical, easiest on the nerves, and that way, you have your own car at your destination. If you were otherwise planning to rent a car, the savings all around definitely add up.

I've been to Disneyworld 3 times now; first time (decades ago), I stayed with my brother, who lived in Florida then; 2nd time, with hubby, we stayed at an inexpensive motel outside the grounds, and 3rd time, we stayed at one of the theme resorts on the grounds at Disneyworld.

By FAR, the best option was staying right there at Disneyworld. It was more convenient, it made the whole trip more of an "experience," we didn't have to fight traffic to and from the park, we could go back for a rest during the heat of the day, then go back to the park again for more rides, or go out for a nice dinner at one of the many restaurants they have. It might have been a little more expensive, but was well, well worth it.

Do you have AAA? Sometimes they will offer discounts for the theme parks.
 
There's only one Auto Train. The one from Lorton. VA. It may not be the most e inimical way especially when you have to drive a ways to get to Lorton, but I'd say it's worth looking into. Or there's two other trains from NYC that go to Orlando. Would need to rent a car or look into other transportation to get to/from the hotel.
 
definitely stay in the park and get a park hopper pass which gains you entrance and riding to almost every park. The most expensive thing I found expensive about disney was the food. But overall it wasn't that bad for everything else considering it was Disney! But there are a lot of restaurants and such to choose from...you and the fam will LOVE it
 
I highly, highly, highly recommend NOT going around the 4th of July. My mom and I went last year (2010). That place was PACKED! We stayed on the grounds at the decades (IIRC) resort. Everything was crowded; took nearly an hour to get food everytime we went to eat in the park; and on the 4th we stayed for fireworks, ended up getting done around midnight but it took 3 hours to get a ride back to the hotel because of sooooooo many people trying to get out at once.

Be prepared to spend a ****-ton of money. In 3 days between 2 people we spent nearly $1000. We did get these awesome mickey mouse shaped soaps though... :roll:
 
wow! that is something I thought might happen. I am prepared to spend ****load of money, but I think I spent less going to maui 10 over 10 years ago between 2 people in 10 days. hotel,flight, car rental was less then 900 bucks for 10 days each. plus a little over 1k spending money, we went on cruise on every other day, drove the hana rd, went snorkling, went to moloki island, drove up to haleaka mtn, went to beeach, etc- all in 10 days. We had a blast time, and i dont think we can do it again that low of a price.

This time with kids, I want to give them a memory before they get too old and it appears to be my last chance for them. But I am not prepared to spend over 2k for a week or so on top of traveling expenses which is what worries me. That why I am asking here for others who done it and what would they avoid or do again at WD. :aw:

save some money by NOT getting the park hopper pass, we spent the entire day inside the magic kingdom, and then another entire day inside epcot (NOT recommending Epcot). If you stay inside the park, you can bundle park tickets onto your room fee and by bundling you can save money. I DEFINITELY recommend staying in the park, parking at disney world is ridiculous, something like $30, but if you stay on the grounds they offer free shuttle service to and from the on-ground attractions.
