VP on PC...wait a mintue...Linux?

What are u trying to say? Speak English. I haven't heard about other Linux products. We are talking about desktop Operating System here, Linux is a company, Ubuntu is a CD,DVD operating system software.

Linux is not a company.

The person who started linux, His name is Linus Torvalds. He took out the s in his name and added the x so he called his OS linux then it become popular because Unix was costly and Linux is open source and similar to Unix.

Anyway yes we run server edition which is basically the same OS as desktop. Only different is that desktop edition have X Windows and a GUI apps like Gnome or KDE etc.

Linux is still not an anti-virus OS and still can get virus. It just not as often as Windows get them.

None of OS are immune to security threat.

I found out that Techbill said Mac OS X got trojan that abuse on network, that's quietly rare and you will asked password to permission, if you don't know about that then just cancel them then you are safer but it does happen when you browse on weird website and porn website.

Same goes to Linux, you will asked for password to install anything or download without your permission, including with hidden files, it's part of option.

Guys this is interesting but I did like to keep this thread alive where I left off as VP on PC for Linux, so I was wondering if u guys are interesting in talking about this in another thread that I can make up. "Linux, Mac, XP, Vista Talk" or rather "Operating System" What do u guys think?

QUOTE=Pacman;958122]Get different webcam?[/QUOTE]

Yup I know. $$$ :eek::dunno::ugh:

I bought the Fusion webcam years ago and the result from research wasn't listed until 4 months later, It finally appeared. it says that Fusion have ftp problem that would not allow it to reach to 30ftp, just 15ftp. While the newer Logitech, 9000 and other newer webcam are able to maximize it's ftp in Linux. V4L2 is still working on kinks and some webcam works, some don't. Phillips webcam was listed but now no longer have driver for it.

Personally, I Wish Wish that I can learn how to program in Pearl, Python, ect so I can build new programs or reconstruct video driver so it would work with many more webcams. I would LOVE to reverse engineer the Windoz webcam driver so I can get it compatible with Linux. I know it's illegal tho.

Also to build a new Videochat software to work with VP100, 200, Ojo, and many more Videophones and have a nice smooth video streaming thru Linux OSes.

That's my wish list tho. It be nice IF anyone locally knows how to program Linux software, Then teach me how!! One of deaf guy I know live locally but he's busy often and will be moving soon. I will be a Linux loner tho.

I just need a challenge to get me going to learn how to program Linuxes. I have old Dell 500mhz laptop collecting dust cuz I accidently dropped it's 2.5 hdd on cement floor (rattling inside Uh ooh). I can use it to boot up live CD linux and run programs in it and save it in USB flash drive. (old Dell laptop can't boot from USB due to BIOS limitation.)

If my wife get her new laptop, I WOULD reformat and install Ubuntu in my Laptop then take it to work and do programming during free time!!. In that way, I would be able to build software for all Deafie to use!! Even include it to Synapic Package for Ubuntu or all Linux variants.

Aye,aye,Capital...No purplecatty you are not ALONE. I'm also a Linux user but in your case i don't really know how to program Linux softwares...

Good idea!

As for Hardy Heron, can't wait. I already installed H H Beta version in AMD 64 system. I'm sure it'll patch up once H H is ready tomorrow. Save me all those trouble downloading it. I'm sure FTP server will be packed LOL.

I will have to do over on Compiz and throw all it's toys in. But the problem is that I have a crappy grahpic card in powerful system (64mb Nvidia GeForce 3 MX400 PCI version). It's kinda like a big bottle neck on my system. I have ATI Radeon 9000 pro AGP on other system. My kids still using it for their game. It works nicely on Compiz. I planned to buy two graphic cards for both system, More likely NVidia w/ 256mb or 512mb memory. It may be a bit old like 6200, 6500, or 6800 cuz of Ubuntu's graphic driver isn't ready for 7200 and higher. I already read the testing result and they said it's best to get a bit older card cuz it's more effective than new one. ATI works but it had some glitch. ATI continue to improve tho. I wanna to turn on "water" effect and leave it on.

Sorry for going off topic.After a little research around the internet, i found this interested [ubuntu] virus protection for ubuntu - Ubuntu Forums it was say that we don't really need a anti-virus, because it possessed no threat whatsoever, but u can install if u want to feel safe.

Yeah I agree with u, mine is also glitch in the Ati drive, I was wondering if i update to 8.04 would that affect the Compiz-Fusion? Or do I need to do it all over?

The person who started linux, His name is Linus Torvalds. He took out the s in his name and added the x so he called his OS linux then it become popular because Unix was costly and Linux is open source and similar to Unix.

Actually, Linus originally called it "Freax" to be shorter than 'Free-UNIX' a play on word for 'Freaks' and when he posted it to the web, the FTP site manager didn't like the name and he changed it to 'Linux'.

Linus Interview said:
He began to work on his own UNIX clone, one that would bring all the hacking power of UNIX to a desktop PC. By early 1991, Linus had created a kernel--the heart of the operating system that works directly with the processor. He called it "Freax," a play on "free UNIX" or hacker "freaks," but when he tried to post it to the Web, the FTP site manager didn't like the implication. He named the FTP site "Linux," after the label Linus had put there for his personal use.

"I never wanted to use that name because I felt, OK, that's a little too egotistical," he remembers. "The name stuck, and right now I'm very happy I didn't call it 'Freax.' "

You can always update it to 8.04 and may not lose Compiz. But I would recommend you that you should make a clone copy of Gusty or Feisty to another hard drive just for back up in case you won't regret that Heron screws your compiz and all that hard work you put in Ubuntu. I did all hard work on Gusty. I have 2nd hard drive that I can clone it. Use either Seagate or Maxor software that allow clone hdd. Or any hdd cloning softwares.

After you finished cloning, Check if 2nd hdd set on Master and see if it boots up and run older Ubuntu w/ Compiz. Then you can Upgrade it to Heron and see if there are any improvement with your ATI.

Better Safe than Sorry!!!

What kind of ATI graphic card do you have, Internal or on card??

My laptop have ATI Express 200M (Mobile) and it is integrated. It didn't work well with Gusty on Compiz (there are issue with Xpress 200M on older Ubuntu till ATI finally churned out 8.38.8 Linux driver to fix it). I haven't tried Heron on my laptop. As for my desktop, I have ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb. It works fine with Compiz except Water effect and couple of other effect it won't run at all. So you'll have to tell me what kind of ATI graphic chipset it is. Usually, you may have to install FGLRX driver for ATI to make it work. There are Terminal command to turn on Rendering. Sometime you may have to use Meta driver for ATI. Try google search on your ATI card or chipset related to Ubuntu Compiz Fusion. that's what I did..

Nvidia cards works well with Compiz (usually the older one like Nvidia GeForce 6800 or older). I had Nvidia Ti200 64mb graphic card that I temporarily used and when I booted up Ubuntu. before it entered log in screen, I saw Nvidia flash screen. It works nicely on Compiz. I noticed the cube spins smoother than ATI.
