At Deaf Expo my best friend and I saw a woman we sort of know. We met her at starbucks in august or September and we keep running into her all over the place. She was walking by starbucks and noticed us signing and she stopped to talk, she is Deaf. Well at Deaf Expo we were talking and she said, I notice you don’t voice, you mouth some words but mostly you don’t voice. My best friend said, yeah it is difficult for him to voice and sign at the same time, (so true OMG you have no idea! LOL) she said, “I like that most hearing people don’t do that they voice the entire time they sign. Voice off is better”
My question is, why is it better? It is surely better for me, although hearing people get aggravated with me because I sign and they don’t know what I am talking about. Would you prefer hearing people not voice when they sign? I personally would. I wind up listening to their voices and not getting anything from the signs.

My boyfriend sometimes gets upset with me because when we're out among deaf people I often don't voice when I sign. I tell him that A.) He won't ever learn if I always interpret for him and B.) It's impossible to sign ASL and speak English at the same time. I can sign & talk better if the deaf person uses more PSE than ASL. It also depends on who my intended audience is. If I'm in a mixed group of deaf and hearing and I'm addressing a hearing person who doesn't sign, then I will sign and talk at the same time.

between the two,, my ex wife's family don't sign, they run their mouth off without my ex and i understanding what they say, so, my ex wife and i sign without voice and saying, hey it isnt fair, we don't understand what you were saying and my ex wife got upset and said, well, we don't understand ya'll either. Her dad yelled at her and said, HEY! I wasn't happy about that. Now, my bf's family, they sign( not asl) and talk at the same time, no problem and sometimes my bf and i talked without voicing, they feel bad, but not mad. So, I said, oh, we were saying.... which family i rather be with, my bf's. My ex wife's family is like hell.

I sign PSE so I could voice and sign at the same time, but it is just hard for me. But is it "better" to do it that way or is this just her opinion?

Dunno if this is off-topic but I think, at minimum, whether in PSE or ASL, one should "mouth".

Well in PSE one can mouth English words, but when signing ASL mouth movements have a different function--more adverbial (to show intensity or degree). That's why it's impossible to sign ASL and talk at the same time.

Ask yourself, "Who am I communicating with?" If it's a Deaf ASL user, then you should try to sign ASL. If it's a Deaf PSE user, then you can sign in PSE and mouth English, but you don't need to voice. If you're communicating with a mixed crowd, you may need to sign and voice. But I NEVER use my voice when I'm will all deaf people. Why would I?

well, for me.. i don't really care.. I grew up voicing while signing so that people could understand what I said. so i'm using to voicing and signing at the same time.. I think it's a matter of individual preferences.

Mouthing and talking are two different things. If using ASL, just mouth that, especially the key words you mentioned....it wouldn't come out English, so what?

it also depends on who i m speaking with. if fully deaf person then i dont use my voice but if hard of hearing who have hard time with signs a bit or a hearing person who is new with sign then yes i use voice.

i personally perfer no voice from either myself or that person who i was listening to cuz if they use english vocally and yet sign ASL often it throw me off cuz i look at face like 90% of time and if the mouthing doesnt match signs then it would take me a moment to figure what they were saying. ya know?

beside since im deaf and i do not use my voice daily like hearing people do... its a great relief not to use it when i m around deaf people lol (my voice do get tired heh)
