That's great news for Texas deaf-resident.

Visual smoke alarms now a state law! (From the Texas Association of the Deaf Newsletter, Fall 2009)

If requested by a tenant, a landlord must install a visual smoke detector that is capable of alerting a person with a hearing impairment of the presence of smoke. Effective:
Jan. 1, 2010.

There would need to be an alarm in every room ! If there is only an alarm in the hallway that would be not of any help if it can't been seen in the rest of the apartment! The bedroom would need one too!
