Anthony Louis "Tony" Panella, 93, of Staunton passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at his home. Born Jan. 6, 1915, in Marblehead, Wis., he was a son of the late Nicholas and Carmella Sasso Panella.

Mr. Panella retired from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in 1986, where he taught graphic arts and was the Varsity boys' basketball coach for 15 years. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, as well as a member of the National Association for the Deaf, the Virginia Association for the Deaf and the Wisconsin School for the Deaf Alumni Association.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Louis Anthony Panella, a sister, Mayme Meagher, and two infant brothers, Tony and Joe, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Andrea Marie Haas Panella, whom he married July 19, 1969; a son, Richard Anthony Panella and wife, Mira, of Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother, Joseph Nicholas Panella and wife, Ann, of Milwaukee; a sister, Mary D. Rich of Waukesha, Wis.; three grandchildren, Lisa Bevington, Nicholas Panella and Gina Gambatese; eight great-grandchildren, Michael and Samantha Panella, Joseph Bevington, Emily Panella, Gina Gambatese, Nicholas Bevington, Anthony Sal Gambatese and Peter Bevington; and nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton, with Father Tom Collins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wisconsin School for the Deaf Athletic Fund, c/o Mr. Steven Fuerst, Delavan, WI 53115 or to Cardinal Stritch University Women's Basketball Team, 6801 N. Yates Road, Milwaukee, WI 53217.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes and Crematory.
