Victorian Deaf Education Institute offers free sign language courses - Your News - Frankston Standard Leader

The Victorian Deaf Education Institute, in partnership with Kangan Institute, is offering free Australian Sign Language (Auslan) courses to parents of deaf children and professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing children.

It is hoped the courses will help build the signing skills of parents of deaf children and enhance the expertise of professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing children.

Auslan is the language of the Deaf community in Australia.

More than 90% of deaf and hard of hearing children are born to hearing families who have little or no experience with deafness.

Courses will be delivered over an 8 week period and are available in a range of skill levels from beginners to advanced across a range of locations in regional Victoria and the greater metropolitan area.

Beginner classes aimed at professionals working with deaf children will commence in Frankston on Monday 25 July 2011 from 4.30pm to 6pm. Intermediate classes will commence on Wednesday 27 July 2011 from 4.30pm to 6pm in Frankston.

Beginners classes aimed at parents of deaf and hard of hearing children will commence on Sunday 24 July 2011 from 10.30am to 12 and on Thursday 28 July 2011 from 4.30pm to 6pm at the Victorian College for the Deaf on St Kilda Road. If you miss the first week, don’t worry, you can still join for week two.

Limited seats are available so booking is essential.

To register please email auslanadmin@kangan.edu.au or (03) 9425 5777 or SMS 0418 524 470. Venue details will be supplied to participants. Or for more information please contact Karyn Barrasso on vdei@edumail.vic.gov.au or call 03 9637 2083
