Viable Brings on Carla Mathers as Staff Attorney

Viable Inc. welcomes Carla Mathers, Esq. to the company as its corporate legal counsel. Viable develops and provides relay service technologies, and Mathers will represent Viable on regulatory issues and counsel on in-house matters.

Mathers comes from 14 years in private practice in College Park, Md., where she was a senior associate litigating primarily employment cases. Among her areas of legal expertise are employment law, contracts and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. She has represented deaf and hard of hearing clients in lawsuits regarding access to interpreting and telecommunications services.

"Ms. Mathers brings with her a diverse background and a wealth of connections that make her an indispensable asset to our customers," said John T.C. Yeh, president and founder of Viable. "Her passionate commitment to communication access makes her a great fit for the company."

In addition to being a member of the bar in the state and federal courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia, Mathers is a nationally certified sign language interpreter and is well-known among sign language interpreters across the country. She has presented on interpreting practices in legal settings for more than a decade and served on a Maryland state committee on interpreter ethics. She is also the author of the 2006 publication, Sign Language Interpreters in Court: Understanding Best Practices.

Mathers received her interpreting degree from the College of Southern Idaho and her law degree from Howard University, where she graduated magna cum laude. In 2005, she was recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf with the Judie Husted Leadership Award.

"I am excited to join Viable, a company that is at the forefront of providing deaf and hard of hearing persons with communication access technology," said Mathers. She joins a workforce of approximately 70 deaf, hard of hearing and hearing employees.
